    NC trailer concerns

Link about the public forum meeting with good information on trailering in NC. Everyone thinks this is BS except the highway patrol. I guess the losers aren't happy unless they are screwing someone out of money. Thank you to the politicians for helping out this issue. Hopefully it will all be straight soon.

    NC trailering

Don't know if there has been a previous post on SFC on this or not, but if you didn't ck out the link, to give a quick idea of what's happening with boat trailering in NC, if your boat or trailer or anything attached to it are over 8'6", you now stand a good chance of getting an overwidth ticket in NC. Like most states, NC never messed with guys that were over the 8'6" limit so long as they were reasonable about it. A 9' wide boat/trailer would very likely never haven gotten pulled, much less ticketed, a couple years ago. Probably could have gone down the road at 9'6" and been fine. Not so today. NCSHP is also hammering down on overweight as well. So if you pull with a truck, and you've over your weight limit, you'd better buy those overweight tags.

Worst part is that if you have to get the overwidth permit, then you are restricted from towing on Sundays,, nights and half days on either side of holidays. Not sure how guys are supposed to bring their boats to the coast for a weekend of fishing! You can always take your chances, but they have without doubt been writing tickets for this stuff lately.

Just a heads up for anyone trailering larger and/or wider boats in NC. Nothing wrong with SHP enforcing the laws. We just need to get the laws changed. We're working with the legislators, but it will take a couple of months. They classify our boats/trailers as commercial vehicles which, unless you're using the boat commercially to make a living, is just plain wrong.

JB is correct. The best thing everyone that trailers a boat in North Carolina is to contact your legislators. Things are being done behind the scenes but the publics input is the best medicine to make the changes possible. Here is a link that will send the letter straight to your legislators. I had posted it earlier but we have made some changes to the original letter. There are suposed to be two bills drafted before May 13th so input about your concerns are very important. As soon as we have a bill to look at we will post it for everyone to look at. Thanks Mark

This is a very serious issue and I encourage everyone to get involved. There was a run on WCTI ABC News 12 yesterday about this issue. The Highway Patrol is not going to let up, Legislators have become involved but we need max participation on this, I also encourage Box to get a Sticky going on this one.

There is supposedly a public forum coming to MHC (date TBD).This is not going to go away!!!!!! Unless we make a stand and get our local politicians involved and someone needs to get Senator Elizabeth Dole on board.

    this and that

    GOT THIS TODAY

    so maybe something will change

Thank you for your e-mail message regarding the boat towing issue that is affecting the boating and fishing communities in North Carolina.

We have received numerous messages dealing with this subject matter, and I contacted the NC DOT asking for their assistance. We recently received a response from DOT that states "due to great interest from the public and legislators", legislation will be introduced in the upcoming Short Session. At this time, I do not know the exact wording of the proposed legislation, but I feel changes will be made to accommodate recreational boaters, and I will work hard for that. I assume any proposed legislation will come before the Transportation Committee, of which I am a member.

I trust this legislation will be beneficial to all. Please contact me if I can be of further assistance to you.
