On the south side of Va and the upper end of NC the best time seems to be Jan and Feb, particularly around the full moon. Look for 62 degree water around the 100 curve and set up. If you see the long liners working you are probably in the right area, even better if they will talk to you on the radio and set you on the bite.

We have them here good in Feb. thru April..... I usually fish north of the point. Never really had to much problems with the sharks. But you do have to keep a good watch for the ships in that area... My best time ever was in March, right off the 100. Anybody interested in going let me know ..... I'M ITCHING!

-anybody (private guys) who wants a HO that has caught them i am in. WE have caught 7 this year off the cigar and i would be will ing to come down off central NC to help someone out. this is not a trip for the weary. It takes a lot of preparring and investment. the tackle and rods/reels take a lot of preparing. PM me and i am in. since there is not a lot of people that do it, finding the fish is the most difficult part. once the fish are found, developing a bite cluster is the next step. although many may not know this, swordfish are a very habit oriented fish. there have been some non-published studies that have shown that these fish follow some very specific migration tracks. we caught 5 pups, one 226# and a 64# this year. can't even begin to count the number of hits. i fished off of FL this past week and we got a 54" cfl fish. the thing that you have to watch for is if you fish too warm water this time of year you will have tuna/sharks on you. swords live in deep water were the temps are around 42 or cooler water. find the bait and find the fish. also don't necessarily take the fl guys word for where to fish for them, b/c we have found that they are not in the same depths of water up here. like said above. if you find the longliners, the fish will probable be there.

I plan on making some attempts out of VA this season and will be looking for experienced crew and buddy boats. Just need five things.

    1. Weather windo.
    2. Good water.
    3. Time off from work.
    4. Buddy boat.
    5. A good crew.
