From what I am aware of, the biggest interest and activity of late is in shale (at least in the US). With the current "depressed" prices and demand, shale developement has slowed considerably in the last year. Offshore activity of late ( as limited as it is) has been focused more on more established areas, such as the North Sea and deeper portions of the Gulf.

If I knew the answer to that I wouldn't be wasting my time on a fishing internet forum--- I'd be so rich (knowing future oil prices), I could build my own private FAD and leaase it from the Govt.

not sure how limited it is in the gulf. as of aug. 24th there were 37 deepwater rigs actively drilling in depths from 1451ft to 8076ft in the GOM.

Get your terminology straight.

Exploratory is what Glenn said.

You said actively drilling.
Actively drilling could include, but is not limitted to: workovers, completions, exploratory etc...

you said "exploratory", he said "offshore activity"--why nit pick everthing I write? my point is there is a hell of alot of drilling going on in the gulf right now in spite of low oil prices(for now). on the other hand I have no idea what reserves lie off of NC or if they will ever be developed.

I know for a fact there is a little bit of both, exploratory drilling and work over drilling or drilling more holes into the same reserve to increase production. I have no idea what the break down is percentage wise.

But there is a massive international boom in Exploratory drilling world wide, a lot of work going on in west Africa ( my current location), the black sea, which my ship was the first one to drill an exploratory well back in 2006 is now getting brand new state of the art ultra deep water drill ship to return to the black sea and continue exploratory drilling. Also the far east, Exxon (through a contractor) has completed the first exploration projects off Indonesia, now there is a consortium of oil companies who are being led my Marathon and are setting up a 2-3 year exploration project that we will be leading.

So Pure exploration is still going on, in fact growing, Gulf of Mexico, pure exploration is probably shrinking, not sure as I haven't worked in the gulf in 3 years. Plenty of production going on which is what all these gulf guy see and fish off of. Completely different animal though then true exploration operation.
