I don't know what the maximum depth is for a platform but in long bay you have to go about 60 miles out before you hit the steeples which is close to the edge of the continental shelf. Frying pan tower is 41 mi out at the end of the shoals and it is 50 ft. You have to go several miles past it to get to 100+ ft of water. Now off Cape hatteras the shelf is closer but for Onslow bay and Long bay the shelf is wide.

WE HAVE RIGS THAT ARE IN VERY DEEP WATER AND SO DOES VENICE. CHECK THE DEPTH AT THE THUNDERHORSE OR THE URSA. OFF OF MISSISSIPPI AND ALABAMA, WE HAVE THE BEER CAN, THE PETRONIUS, AND THE RAM POWELL THAT ARE PAST THE SHELF IN THE GULF. AND YES WE DO HAVE TO GO ALMOST 100 MILES TO GET OVER A COUPLE HUNDRED FEET OF WATER FROM WHERE I FISH BUT THERE ARE STILL LOTS OF RIGS ONCE YOU GET OUT THERE.

the floaters are awesome also. here is a picture of Ursa that we fished around for the Emerald Coast Billfishing Classic this year. Caught tuna around it before daylight. tagged a white the first pass. it was the owner's first billfish.

Ursa sits in 4000 ft of water.

you can read about her here:

Its really a mute point about where there going to be. The platforms will become FADS. If you like Marlin, wahoo and tuna fishing hope there out in the stream, if you like bottom fishing hope there on the shelf. There are also rigs off of La and Ala coast that are in 1500+ft water that are not floating platforms.

i hope they do it. i think it would send the tuna fishing especially through the roof. I would love to be able to get ahold of triple digit yellowfins out of NC, and i think the platforms MIGHT do it. FLoaters are the shit

Plus it would provide lots of jobs for eastern NC, which could really use them, and maybe keep me in NC cause I can bet my company would be building either the refineries or the platforms themselves.

Fact check, sorry this is just not true, the technology is not available right now to have platforms in 1500ft of water, in the gulf oil field. They are all floaters at that point.

Exactly, they are floaters, not platforms. I have drilled right next to the thunder horse, she sits in several thousand feet of water, its been 3 years so I don't remember exact water depth, but she is a floater...not a platform. Big difference. "RIGS" can be in any water depth up to about 12,000 ft as current technology limits, but they are ALL floating not platforms. Like said though they still attract a lot of fish look at satan chariots posts for proof. I can look over the side at any give minute any day and see hundreds of yellowfin, dolphin, marlin, sharks, and baitfish.

You should look at your facts before making that kind of statement

    Compliant Tower
A compliant tower consists of a narrow tower and a piled foundation. Unlike a fixed
platform, a compliant tower has greater flexibility and can withstand large lateral forces by
sustaining significant lateral deflections. It is usually deployed in water depths between
    1,000 and 2,000 ft (305 and 610 m).

Pg 45 and 46 here....Plus Ive fished it myself http://www.gomr.mms.gov/PDFs/2008/2008-013.pdf
