My Grandfather is a ROCK !!! He made it through the surgery with no serious issues as of this evening. After coming off heart / lung bypass his heart started right up. Surgeons were very please with how well he did … and is currently on minimal support (essential he is breathing without much assist)
He will be brought out of the heavy sedation possibly tonight !! likely sometime tomorrow. Naturally there are still a few hurdles to get over in the next few days but the big one has past !! They did indicate that his valve was in rough shape, so I would imagine he will feel pretty damn good after he gets going with rehab.

Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes, it really means a lot, you have no idea.
The “funny” thing about this is how unprepared I was for today. I say that because I did clinical rotations while in pharmacy school many years ago at this same hospital. I spent more than half my time on the Surgical, Coronary Care and Cardiothoracic Units. I knew what to expect, I saw it day in and day out, yet that all went out the window … it didn’t matter as this was Pop.

Mike ...I hear ya on the ICU's. Good things and far to often bad thing happen there. Glad it ended positive for you guys.

Still keeping fingers crossed and prayers said that he continues down this positive path to recovery

Last night and tonight’s updates are inspiring.
After the surgery my Mom was told that Pop would most likely be confused when he first came out of sedation. Not my Grandfather. Was very alert and knew what had gone on. He is amazing the staff taking care of him, they did not expect this level of recovery out of a 91 year old. He is off the ventilator. Has already had clear liquids and jello...at that point not even 24 hrs out of surgery. He's sitting up and having conversation with my Mom, Uncle and Aunt. Mom said he is even entertaining the nurses … Way to go Pop !!

Today the word is that he was eating real food …. Anything he wanted. He will be in the ICU hopefully only one more night then he is off to a step down unit. The nurses wanted to “show” him off to some younger patients to show what a 91 year old can do. You Rock Pop

My condolences to you and your family. Losing your Dad is rough. I know I felt cheated 13 years ago when my Dad passed.
