Yep, you are dead-on with that. However, there are a lot of drawbacks and I just can't remember what they are?
Some people tend to have "problems" using CP...getting cloudy finishes I think mostly. I really don't know if CP helps the color of feathers like it does nylon thread...but I figure it won't hurt it at the very least.
One reason I used CP for the VERY FEW feather inlays I've done instead of Permagloss is that I got a little extra time to be sure everything is like I want it. As you have assuredly figured out by now, Permagloss kicks faster than a wild pony at a rodeo! I have always used U40 CP and have experienced zero problems with it.
Jesse, actually you apply CP before applying your epoxy. You don't mix the two together.
Standard nylon thread will turn translucent when wet...just like in a wet t-shirt contest...not that I'd know anything about that. The problem is after it is coated with epoxy it doesn't get it's color back and you can see right through it. Sometimes this is desirable, but most times it is not. There are two ways to combat this change of color (or loss of color). One is to coat the wrap (normally multiple coats) with Color Protector. Once dry, the thread retains its color and you can apply epoxy with the confidence your colors will remain bright and crisp. The other way to keep colored thread colored is to use NCP thread. NCP stands for No Color Preserver meaning you don't need to apply CP for it to retain its color...just epoxy and go. The drawback with NCP thread is that it is 'slightly' weaker than regular nylon and it tends to be a tad more "dull" in appearance than regular nylon.
For me...unless I'm looking for a translucent effect I almost always use NCP for my colored thread. There is however one exception...BLACK thread. Black NCP looks a bit "off black" after epoxy is applied. To get a true, brilliant black I always use regular nylon black thread. With the color black, CP is not required. It will not turn translucent on you...but it will give the brilliant black you're looking for.
Ok...enough rambling from me.

Jim, the subject "color preserver" will cause as much of a stir-up as "splining(or spining)" does in the rod-building industry.
Ya want to have "fun" ?? inquire about it at www.rodbuilding.org
I used cp on my first build and I'm ashamed to show it![]()
Ever since I used ncp tread, and the colors WILL stay the same.(before and after epoxy) I've never used feathers so I dunno the remedy to them.
No matter what ya do, eventually your rods WILL fade over time.
Just my $0.02
Well, it is the end of the month or close enough. Everyone has had a good laugh on me. I promised a month, and feel I delivered on that.
Some folks have gotten something out of this thread. Some have not. Either way, I got to create something I was into. Also, I got something out of this as well. What do they say? "A good job is its own reward, but no good deed goes unpunished."
I got a lot of great PM's this month from people and I want to thank all of you for the kind words. I may have actually received more nice notes this month, than in the last couple years combined? Anyway thanks.
I also got a lot of not so nice PM's from people. Hopefully those people will realize one day that sending people nasty notes are really your own issues to deal with, not the recipient.
I also do want to give a quick thanks to everyone that visited my Threadsite ( and chumtini for coining the phrase ) In reality, you all made it what it was, not me.
For me, this thread is over. Now I have to decide, do I fall back into the ranks with the rest of the hethens, or what? I looked through some of the other threads tonight, and there just wasn't much appealing about any of it. I guess we will see.
Peace Out on this one.
*Thumps chest twice with fist, then flashes peace sign*
This has been a great thread - Thanks for your efforts.
Hopefully soon Gale will go away and we can get on with fishing, learning and sharing.
I vote you hang in Jim , I haven't added to it but then again I won't be offshore to the end of May at the earliest, but I followed it multiple times a day. Thanks
