    My Pet Stripers

These are true stripers from an aquaculture guy in Delaware. They are from the Delaware/Chesapeake stock. They are about 3-4 inchs. They aren't eating great yet but we'll see. It was neat to watch them chase down some rosy reds from the pet store last night.

Absolutely awesome additions to the aquarium.
I assume the "rosy reds" your speaking of are a freshwater "feeder" fish. If this is correct, you had better try to get them feeding on SOMETHING that lives in salt water. Live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill or anything else they can get in their faces.

Freshwater fish don't have the vitamins and minerals needed to sustain saltwater fish and although they feed and look healthy, they eventually starve to death, or get sick and die related to malnourishment.

Even if you can get them to eat chunks of clams or peices of fish, get them on a salt diet.

    I have a question....because I really have no idea.

What about the landlocked stocks in the wild. They live their whole life in fresh water. Smith Mountian Lake in VA comes to mind. My father and I went camping down there for a few years when I was a kid and we caught a bunch of Striped bass up to 14lbs over by the dam. I have heard the term hybrid... is the ability of them to eat freashwater species part of what makes them "hybrid"

I have a 180gal Saltwater "native species" tank set up in my basement. It houses local Long Island Sound fish, right now Blackfish, Seabass, a small Summer Flounder, baby lobster and a bunch of crabs (hermits, Asian, Greens). Oh by the way, I DO have a license from the State of CT to collect these. My daughter wants to do a school project as she's very interested in Aquaculture/Marine Biology. Next spring we'll collect some baby Stripers, Porgies, Winter Flounder and bunch of other interesting fish/crustaceans.

Anyway, all I can tell you is that fish of all types require a while to acclimate to their new surroundings. Be sure to give them a place to feel secure (i.e. some cover, rocks, driftwood, etc..) In a few days you can probably get them eating some live food. Even in the tundra of CT, I go down to my dock and collect small shrimp and crabs in a trap to feed the fish. Heck, they eat better than I do.

This is not true. These fish will grow healthy on feed. The feed I have has the protein and makeup of a rainbow trout. Thats what alot of the freshwater stripers feed on in the bigger reservoirs. The aquaculture guy I got them from has raised them as big as 14lbs in a 1 acre pond. He sells them as fingerlings to guys all over the US.

All landlocked Stripers are not hybrids. Very cool pics and fish. Check with the local regs if you haven't already about keeping them in a tank. Don't get me wrong, I could care less, just FYI. Thanks for sharing the pics. I would not feed them much while they are acclimating to the tank, especially if the tank has not been established for a long time already. Thanks for sharing the pics.
