Great write up Nick. Awesome picks and explainations.
We tie a knot right to the hooks. Its a little less hardware then using crimps. We also don't use the 3 way swivel either.
Here is how we make our rigs for grouper fishing.
We take about a 7' piece of leader material. Double it over at the top and do a double over hand leaving a small loop. That is where your snap swivel attaches to the leader.
The tag end ends up beaing about 15" and thats where we tie our top hook.
We then go to the bottom of the leader and double it up and make a bigger doulbe over hand knot. That gives us a loop about 3 " in size which is where our weight goes. Our tag end is about 15-24" long and thats where we tie our bottom hook.
Done deal.

We use:
Penn 114 6/0 black side plate Senator reels with the drags locked down. They have 130 lb test braid line. We use Precision Auto Electric reels from:
http://www.fish-ng.com/ Their site is down at the moment.
http://www.tackletogo.com/fingpe11prel.html This site has a picture of what the electric reel looks like.
Our rods are 6' medium heavy action rods.

Glad to see you have the exact same combo as me with that saltist/trevala combo. Only difference is yours has caught grouper.

Outstanding post Biscuit! Last week my crew & I were "wore out" from the tunas and decided to take a break and go bottom fishing for a couple of days. Had a blast! I found your post very helpfull and timely, as I am here in the shop right now making up some rigs! Thanks a ton!!!
