Center of boat. Behind Flats and always before long riggers. Usually just before short riggers. If a real tight spread, can be a little behind short riggers.
No, it's not just a big boat thing.
Thanks Glenn, is it run in the prop wash or beyond? On a small boat, is it run from down low or the t top? Does it run from the rod tip or some type of release clip? Laslty is there one bait that is prefered in that position or do you just match the spread?
This season we ran a black bart blue breakfast mouse trap bait very tight. We kept it in between the short rigger and the flat lines. It does a great job of raising white marlin close to the flat line bait. You just have to be quick to get it out of his mouth and the flat line slid up close to him. We had one white that wouldn't let go of the darn thing. Never hooked him, but just kept on grabbing it running with it until we could yank it out of his mouth. When we cranked hard on it to get it away from him he would pick it back up and drag it for 20 yrds or so and we would snatch it out of his mouth. It was like playing tug of war with a puppy.
Running a spread like this was quicker than having the pitch bait ready. If a white did pop up on the mouse trap bait then someone grabbed the flat line and slid it right to him, while someone cranked super hard to get the black bart away from him.
Thanks for the info guys.I normals run a spreader bar there when tuna fishing and it has produced a lot of fish. The only problem with the bar is that it is a magnet for other lines to get hung in.
We run a 'mouse trap' and it is usually just another bait similar to whatever else we have out. ilander is a good choice for any position, but will run one here. somtimes i will slip out a trolling weight in front of the mouse trap also.
I will second that the bart breakfast is a very good teaser. 3 out of our 5 sails this summer were right off of the breakfast. i like running it behind a couple of squid, same color as the breakfast, right in front of the short rigger
