I have been outside of Syracuse, NY working this week and got invited by one of the guys at the store to join him on a goose hunt this morning with local guide, Jason Barnes, his dog, Captain, and a mutual friend/guide Jimmy. Jason ownes a guide company called Frontenac Fowlers and had scouted a couple hundred birds on the lake next to his house last night.
The plan this morning was to set the decoys early in hopes of getting a shot at first light then wait them out as they go to the field behind the lake to feed. On their return flight they had been flying right over his blind location.
Sounded like a perfect recipe and it was. At first light we listened and watched as the sky turned black down the lake with geese heading to the field to feed.
At 8:00am the first bird of the day, a single, turned the corner and headed straight to the decoys. Earlier in the morning, Jason told us that if singles come in, "everybody stand up and blast their ass". If flocks come in, "shoot your position" and drop as many as you can. Don't let ANYTHING fly away if you can. Well, this first single didn't stand a chance. All 4 of us stood up in the blind simultaneously and turned him into a ball of feathers.
After the first bird it got quiet for an hour and a half until the birds started returning to the lake. When they did, all hell broke loose. Flocks of 20-30 birds were coming over every few minutes with groups of 4-7 falling in on top of our heads. When the dust cleared, there were 12 birds down and more coming on the horizon.
We scrambled to pick up what we had down and settled back in for another round. Same story as before but only a short burst this time. Dropped 9 more before the action stopped for the morning.
Finished the morning with 22 birds. Almost every bird that came within range was killed. I think we only had 3 birds that made it out alive. We consertively saw 200+ birds and was by far the best goose hunt I've ever been on. Jason said at the end of the day this was by far his best day of the season as well.
Thanks Jason for a great hunt and I look forward to doing it again soon!
