    moon phases and fishing....

Everyone knows that sunset and sunrise are some of the most productive times for fishing but I have been doing some research on my long nights at work with nothing else to do and have learned a little something that no one seems to ever talk about. The moonrise and moonset...... It seems most people talk about the full moon and new moon blah blah blah but no one ever mentions the moon rise and set. I have been looking back at my best days of fishing and looking at the aproximate time of day we started bringing the meat to the boat and especially the days were we just caught so much we had to quit before our arms fell off and 90% of the fish caught was within the time frame 45mins before or 45 mins after the moonrise or moonset. Coincidence, I thought it might be but I looked into it a little more and did a google search. My search seemed to show the same results from different people and many studies have been done to prove it. Those days where we just killed em were days when there was a full moon or new moon or it was 3 days or less after one and the time of the that day was 45 mins before or after a moonrise/moonset. What do you think???? Does anybody else here have any info like this? I thought this was kinda cool so I had to get the pro's take on it....lol I am pretty bored right now

negative the moon rises and sets at different times of the day and night depending on the cycle. Check it out http://www.timeanddate.com/worldcloc...&afl=-11&day=1

A couple of days before or after the new/full moon there will be a spring tide (excessive high and low)...Many inshore species feed upon the tides...the stronger, the better for bait/fish movement...Same can be said about offshore species...Wahoo for example feed upon the tides...The stronger the tide, the hotter the bite...Also, barometric pressure does play into the scheme of thing.

The moon rise, moon directly overhead and moon set are 3 of the best times I have ever had while chasing the giant old drum. Throw in the full moon and it gets 2x as good. I have had not a strike the whole day and the moon rise starts then it goes off!
This is not neccesarily at night time either.

Good thread! Moon rise/set,Sun rise/set, tides, wind direction, clear water or not(inshore flounder), water temp, edges/bottom contour/structure, barometric pressure, weather fronts, and water depth. That's alot of info to assimilate for a days fishing but on the days you don't have a choice and have to go (charter) you have to look at which of these fits into your plan A and which fit plan B and make a call for possibly a targeted speices! But we are just fishermen!

man we will plan our trips around these things. Usually we just monitor the major and minor bite times for the day(based on solar and lunar rises and sets) and make sure we are fishing during those times. I have a watch that they sell at walmart it is the Casio(pathfinder fishing timer) you plug in your lat/long wee you normally fish and it can tell you the best 4 times of the day to be fishing also rates them from 1-5 on which is the best. The damn thing just vibrated on my arm as I was typing this telling me i should be fishing. I have a picture from our last trip showing my watch vibrating and at the exact same time we got covered up by mahi

It may sound stupid but this side of the pond for fresh water it is followed widely, I cannot see why it would not work in the ocean along with tides have a look here add or subtract your time zone and tides might help. http://www.moonstrike.co.uk/home.html
