Ok, I am meat fishing (dolphin, wahoo and kingfish)
Should I use wire or mono leaders ?
7 lines. 2 flats, 2 short riggers, 2 long riggers and 1 shot gun (and maybe 2 teasers).
How would you spread um out?

I REFRESH THE QUOATE HERE AND REITERATE THAT YOU DIDN'T MENTION TUNA....SO HERE GOES MY THOUGHT:
MAHI AS WE ALL KNOW WILL CHEW ON A LEADER MADE FROM BANGLADESH HEMP COATED IN ROUND-UP CONCENTRATE AND RED DEVIL LYE........SO THE ONLY NEGATIVE TO USING WIRE ON MAHI IS THE DESTRUCTIVE CHARACTURE OF WIRE (KINKING) ON ANY FISH
WAHOO ....WELL, IF THEY WILL EAT A HI-SPEED LURE WITH CABLE THAT WOULD MAKE A 400 FT CAT CRANE OPERATOR HAPPY....THE SAME GOES FOR THEM AS WELL....HE WILL CHEW ON MONO AND WIRE WITH NO RESERVATION.......
IF HE SNAPS AT A BAIT ON MONO AND TURNS....YOU WILL HOOK HIM IN THE END OR TOP OF THE FORE-SNOUT AND SHOULD BE ABLE TO PUT HIM INDABOX.....HE HE IS CHARGING THE SPREAD AND CONTINUES FORWARD HE MOST LIKELY WILL SEVERE THE MONO......
SO .....IN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION ...WIRE OR MON ON MAHI-WAHOOSKI-KINGFISH......IT'S WIRLITZER TIME BABY!!! THE PIANO RULES... OR ....IF PIANO WIRE IS NOT AVAILBLE....BRITE S/S #8
WIRE ON SHOTGUN ALWAYS...WIRE ON SHORT RIGGERS...MONO ON LONG (WHY? THATS JUST THE WAY I HAVE DONE IT FOR MANY YEARS)........FLATS....I USUALLY DO THE DINK THING ON MONO THERE ANYWAY
ROCK ON.....
I'm with Box for the most part...Mono with wire cheaters on the shotgun and long riggers...![]()
Wire on the short riggers, flats, planer and mouse trapp except when marlin fishing, but you did not say that so...![]()
Thanks Box,
That makes a lot of sense.
I know it sounded like a dumb question but I just recently was invited to fish a tournment (dolphin, wahoo & kingfish) on a friends boat. They used all 80# mono and dink rigs.It didn't make sense to me. Not hardly a chance of catching the wahoo or king. I think I would have pulled all wire myself.

I agree with BOX on the importance of wire for the hoos but do not under estimate the power on mono. We have caught over twenty wahoo this year on mono and have only been cut off once. We got two yesterday on mono from the short rigger and long rigger poistion. This time of year with the hot mahi bite and the occasional hoo I am running all mono except for the shotgun and planer bait. If we start to see more hoos over the course of the day I will add more wire in. I am using 100lb leader on standard baits and 80lb on dinks.
Got it.
Thanks
I like running wire on my farthest bait out at all times. I do like it on the flat line if my bait is dressed up. If naked here then mono it is. I do like a wire leader on the planer rod bait.
In the fall here in NC I run wire on everything.

Since we do a lot of kingfishing wire is the only way to go. I use 44# malin single strand attached to my live bait pulling hook. I have some mono circle hood rigs that I will use for cobia or if a sail comes up in our spread.
