    Mono versus Braid tensile strength

I performed a tensile strength breaking point of different brands including mono and braid (all new unused).

I tried several calibrated spring scale tensiometers.

I tried various pulls. ie: a slow constant pull, and variable degrees of faster pull. I didn`t take notes along the way but came to the conclusion in all tests that I could not reproduce manufacturure claims. I admit there are alot of variables that could enter into the equation.

Although my methods of testing were not per manufacturer specifications, the outcome of the actual breaking point was far less than the actual stated pound test of the line. Some consistantly were 30% less than the stated pound test of the line. No matter how I tried, I couldn`t get close the rated test line of the product.

Another point to consider is the tensile strength of your boats rigging. Think that line can hold 1000 pounds as rated even when new?
Maybe, but after my tests with just fishing line I have doubts.

    Wanna Bet

We did a bunch of destructive testing on a machine built by another. He works for an elevator company and made what I would call a lab quality tensile tester capable of even making BOX backup. 800 pounds ...no problemo...just don't stand down stream

We pulled on lines, leaders, crimps, lures and plugs, mono, knots, braids, fluoro (new and and old) DON'T THROW AWAY THE OLD We busted hooks yup even new hooks made by everyone...We busted enough stuff to make a tackle retailer smile

Think of it as mythbusters in da pit.....

We never published any findings afraid someone would sue for certain but got one heck of an edgeikation

We did this test on power pro and had some pretty disturbing facts. It was not breaking near what they claimed and it normally broke at half its rated strength. When we added a short mono topshot it got much better but still much less than the rating. All winter I was having 200lb power pro break while pulling #16 and #24 old salty's. Power pro is on my s%#& list and now for my braid I am using Daiwa saltiga braid almost exclusively. It is thinner and stronger than power pro which equates to lighter jigs and lead when bottom fishing and a little bit more line capacity. Anybody else have any similar experiences with power pro?

I try and stay away from brand recognition unless it's a good thing but we no longer use that particular brand for similar reasons

I think PowerPro is the worst of the braids. It frays the easiest and has it's share of mysterious break offs.

I like the Stren braid the most.

Interesting stuff with the fishing line, I'm sure the numbers that the mfrs arrive at are with some ideal testing rigs & conditions. That's why I like to keep my drags at around 25% of breaking strength most of the time. Hopefully I'll have an abnormally strong batch of line when that once in a lifetime fish comes along!

As for the "rigging" and other weight handling gear, remember that the safe working load (SWL) rating of shackles, turnbuckles, wire rope, etc. is very different than the breaking strength of fishing line. Significant factors of safety are applied to get you to the SWL rating. Comparing the two is like comparing apples to dodge trucks.

And stay far away from gear that does not have a SWL rating marked/stamped on it.

But you make a good point in that pushing any limit is pushing your luck....

i know there was some problems with some bad batches of power pro a couple of years ago.(sounds like their quality control might need some help) i had a batch of 60 (brand new)on one of my tog rods and every time i went to set the hook it broke. after losing several rigs i opted for my spare. i went ahead and bought another spool and havnt had a problem. i really love the stuff for wreck fishing. i understand there is another braid called i think "tuff line" that has had some good reviews from wrecking buddys of mine.
