Mono leader coil isssues
I just got done making 6 60# windon sailfish leaders. It actually took longer to un-coil the mono leader than it did to make the windons. Does anyone have a tip for using mono leader coils ? you know the ones that come with 4 wire ties on them. The ones that always get so friggin tangled you usually end up throwing half of them away.
I would think some of you tackle dealers out there would contact some the line manufactures and get them to put the chit on a 5 cent plastic spool. I don't care if it's Momoi's, Penn, Sifix or Jinki the first company to put mono leader material on a spool I gonna buy it....
Glad I got that off my chest

Banned Camp - I am on PROBATION!!
I go to my local tackle shops and see if they have any of the 5lb spools of mono left that they used or solt off and need to get rid of.. alot of times they have them and i coil them onto that.. it makes it a lot easier for me to use and works out great!!!
I try to coil it not to tight so it doesnt get all messed up but works pretty well!!
I attach the end with a piece of tape and then just coil it around it! then it just spins right off.

Sit down Shut up And fish
put a hole in the center of the coil bag, place the coil in the bag put the end through the middle and close the bag.

When you start pulling make sure you try to figure out which side of the line starts on the outside and which line pulls from the inside. If you can make your best guess and pull from the outside you got a better shot if you take it slow. Easier to show then tell. If you got the outside line narrowed down take all the twist ties off except one. Keep the line loose in your hand with the twist tie in your grip, loosen up that one twist tie and everything should come off easy if you take your time and dont tighten down the spool. If you notice you are pulling from the inside of the "spool" take the twist tie off, lay the spool down flat and you should be able to lift the line out by slowly ripping it off by raising it straight up, sort of like a snake coming out of a basket.

I REMOVE ALL OF THE TWIST TIES BUT ONE......THEN TAKE THE TOP TAG END AND PUSH IT CLEAR OF WIRE TIE
THEN GRIPPING THE ENTIRE COIL OF LEADER IN MY LEFT HAND (WITH WIRE TIE ON).....HOLD THE COIL OUT IN FRONT OF YOU....NOW GRIP THE COIL WITH YOUR RIGHT FIST (YOU ARE NOW FIST-TO-FIST)
NOW WITH YOURRIGHT FIST ROTATE THE ENTIRE COIL IN YOUR LEFT FIST IN A COCKWISE MOTION....DROPPING THE TAG END TO THE FLOOR...
CONTINUE THIS AND GUESSTIMATE HOW MUCH YOU NEED
REMEMBER TO GRIP FAIRLY TIGHT WITH YOUR LEFT HAND
FLUORO TIP: ALWAYS "STORE " CUT FLUOROCARBON LEADER IN THE SAME DIAMETER AS IT WAS PACKAGED

When using coils mostly for me it is anything more than 100 lb test anything smaller I use a bulk spool.
I take off all wire ties, bread ties etc. I then hold the entire coil on hand and take my other hand and back off loose coils throughout the entire length of the house until I get to the coffee table. I will then put all ties back on the coil and pull the entire length of uncoiled leader and the tied up coil to me until I get through making leaders. When I see the tied coil coming closer to me I estimate how much more or less I will need to finish out another leader and either repeat the process or wind up the unused portion. I will let off anywhere from 60-100 feet at a time when doing this.
The trick here is to look at the coil before doing this and figure out which tag end is in fact the real tag end and the not the opposite end coming through the side of the coil.

I new I would get some good response here.
TheBigI - this is a great idea, I already tried it with 250# and it seems to work great. But will it work with 60#? One of the line manufactors needs to pick up on this post a make a package that will work as you have explained
Box - i read you post several times before i understood it. it's to simple - works it like an electricians fish tape, just slide the tie as you turn the spool - i feel so stupid. thanks
Sportfishingusa - This will work great for the bench but would be a little hard for me to do on the boat because i carry several different size leaders and the spools would just be to bulky. Now if the spools were tall and thin
Any other good ideas or tips?
thanks,

Buy Seagar or Ande they come in easy to use dispensers for 60#.

Stop staring at my Avatar.
I use the methods described by bones and BOX...which method I use usually depends on how the leader is coiled in the package and how easy it uncoils.
TIP - When I get a new package of leader I take a red sharpie marker and color the inside tag end (center of coil) so now I know not to grab this tag end...I also color the outside tag end with a black sharpie marker after each use...Now I can find the "right" tag end quickly!

My best friend has a 65 footer
These work great for storing leader coils until use:

I cut 'em in half to make twice as many.
Similar wraps available in auto parts stores, electrical section of Wal-Mart, etc. (I think the ones pictured above are available in Joe Shute's shop in MHC.)
When coiling leaders, make the loops about the same size as they were in the original package, and allow the line to lay naturally letting the tag end untwist as you make more coils. This keeps the coil from trying to unravel itself like a spring.
