    wide range

That is heavy tackle set up for the standard widerange with a single hook.We rig it that way b/c here in Kona absolute monsters eat that artless piece of rubber like it's the last thing to eat in the ocean! One of my best friends and former captains caught a 1337lb. on the standard all black at Ascension Island and I have seen some "Holy #&@!" sized fish eat them as well For the size of fish it sounds like you have, try scaling down the widerange one size smaller, they get bit just as good if not better and your hook up ratio should be better b/c the smaller size has less rubber to interfere with hook. Use the same single hook rig but a 9/0 Jobu. From the sounds of it it would do you a lot of good to get your hands on some 7 inch chrome jetheads w/blue/silver skirts over black or purple skirts. The 9 inch works awesome as well. These two lures catch 5 pound yellowfins to 14oo lb. blues. For where you are rig the same with single jobu 8/0 for 7 inch jet, 9/o for 9 inch jet but scale down your leader. If plenty of wahoo and kings around use short wire section (#7 or #9) and albright the wire directly to 80lb. wind on.
Oh yeah, Keep plenty of replacement skirts on board, you will need em!Good Luck

Isn't it so interesting that for the most part everyone catches the same type of fish, but our cultures are so different??

As a Southeast Florida fisherman, I fish a 23 with 2/F150 9' beam. A full day trip includes:

    4 TLD 25 30# Trolling Rods
    2 4500 Baitrunner 20# Spinners
    2 5000 Spheros 12# Spinners (pitch)
    2 Torium 20 20# Conv

Our lure spread (with ballys/strips) include sailure/ilander/tracker/jr, billy/rattler, witches

Our lure spread (lure only) includes moldcraft, dolphin candy, chrome jethead chaos, cedars and williamson cheapo poppers

We generally start out early morning with the wahoo spread 4 rods 130-300 feet zig-zag (1-3 miles offshore) with a few trips to 450 ft (4 miles). The lures tend to be a mix/layers of islander, witch, octopus, weighted with/without strips/hoos. At nine, we decide to either either troll general (billy/ilander/candy/moldcraft/jetheads/cedars) and extend the troll from 150-600 feet (1.5-6 miles offshore). The other option is to slow troll with the toriums/4500s deep and flats with dead sardines and/or live bait. The last option is if we can fill the well, we drift from 300 into 100 with 2 down, 2 flat and 2 on the kite - all livies.

They key to this original thread was dealing with the days I go out after work or 1-2 hour trolls when I don't want to get messy or deal with bait. And Moldcraft seem to be a great option if I can figure out the best hook rig for them. If we come across fish for dinner, I just go straight home and rarely bring much ice.

This is a great forum and lots of good ideas. Keep it coming!

    Jrl,

I hear you on those short hops and not wanting to mess with bait. I'm sure that you use ballyhoo part of the time. Here's an alternative that works great, is always standing by and ready, that never blows out or rots or gets destroyed by garbage fish and a whole lot more that should be self-evident. They have been designed specifically for the lighter tackle that both Florida and California fishermen like to use. These puppies REALLY WORK in ballyhoo venues! And the best part is, when you want to go, go, and just pull 'em out, drop 'em in and watch the fish jump all over them.

The ProSquids are all 8 1/2", same size as medium ballyhoo. As you can see, they come with different numbers of them on various bars.
