    MICRO-SPEAR FISHING w/pics.

The boys have taken an interest in spear fishing over the summer. Even dropped by a dive shop while on vacation in OBX. We've seen many home made set ups but nothing like they've created. Part of there responsibilities around the house is to feed the 4lb large mouth, 11lb catfish, other LMB, crappie and bluegill in the backyard water garden. They gather bugs, dig worms and catch small minnows and panfish.

This is where it gets small thus the MICRO-SPEAR...They take a regular rubber band and a bunch of my wooden skewers from the kitchen and head to the river with goggles. Todays catch totaled 31. They watch for a small 2-3 inch fish to take cover under or behind a rock and swim in for the kill, when the fish pokes his head out to check on the situation the boys release one of the 10" wooden spears from the rubber band for a clean kill. All the backyard fins were pleased to see their success. One day the AR145 will be approached without our normal tackle... ONE DAY...

    Hey Dad,

Isn't that how all this start's. I used to fish for bull gudgen's when I was a kid, a broken limb, piece of string, saftey pin and some balled up bread. Wasn't world class but kept me out of trouble, well not all the time. Those kid's are thinkin', that's a much needed skill. Guess what their outside and not playin video game's, there's yet!!!! Hat's off to ya Pop's! Frank

They are not the average neighborhood kids BOX was asking about a few weeks back.

I can't take the credit for them as I work days while their mom spends her summer break with them doing what ever activity they come up with. She also was a stay at home house wife for the first 9 years of being a mother of 3 boys. She has done an amazing job with the boys and as a bonus I get to be apart of it.

Typical day today: I brought them each a copy of the VADGIF 2010-11 hunting regs. They sat, read and discussed while asking question noting that ducks, geese and dove were not listed. Told them I would get the fed regs. for migratory birds later.

Today they brought home a fresh water eel.

That is exactly what growing up should be like. Congrats to you and your wife for raising them right!
