    MHC report 8/9/08

Word of the month is SLOW has been for a while now. Seems that the sails have not shown up consistantly like years past and the white marlin bypassed us. The dolphin bite lasted for just a few weeks since the absence of grass especially made up lines plauged the summer months. Even 2 of the most productive tournaments as far as numbers go were plauged with slow fishing also. We spent the day Sat. from 30 to 100 fathoms pulling dredges teasers and dinks only getting 1 wahoo a couple of cutoffs and a baracuda bite along with a mystery bite to end the day. Most boats i talked with charter and private made a day of AJ's and Cudas with a sail caught by one charter boat (offshore) saw 2 more caught on inshore full days. I guess the summer dulldrums are here hell i even heard it was slow in Hatteras. Sure hope we get some new water with some life in it soon.

I can report more of the same fishing out of Wrightsville and Morehead. Our total count from 8 trips during the last month is one sail, a couple of 12 lb dolphin, several cudas and AJs inshore and no marlin.

Maybe it will turn on soon, but until I hear reports of folks whacking 'em, I'm staying in close to Spanish fish! (Which has been excellent all summer long)

The next bite on a jig.
FYI, the water at the Same Ole was pretty and blue on Saturday. That was the break though. Inshore of it was fugly.

Maybe some of that will work up.

Sorry the billfish weren't around, no real fire on the bottom either last week...
Another couple weeks and hopefully things will change!

We were AJ fishing around there, but we had three eel 12" long jigs in a row cut off right under the boat by something big and toothy. I'm guessing wahoo's, but didn't have to be.

I was out on Friday - Started around Big10/Little10 - Water was fugly, so I pushed off to the 14 Bouy - Water a bit better, but no flying fish, so I moved towards 90ft Drop. Picked up 2 decent mahi, lost a wahoo at the boat, and had a handful of short strikes on the planer...

Chainlink was flying 3 sail flags - No idea where they fished...

In August the sails are in close if you find some nice water. Sometimes you overrun them. I know of one hooked Sat. at the P bouy. We got a sail about 2 miles offshore of the 14. SE swell, fish to the SE.
