MHC Report 12/17

My Dad fished on the Sea Wolf with Capt Sean and Capt Marsten today since I had other commitments in OC and he didn't want to sit at the dock.

He was supposed to just ride along, but ended up being the angler on a 92" BFT. Dressed weight was 325. Took about an hour on 130. Fish hit a planer bait a few miles east of the Big Ten.

Congrats on a good fish .. we got an 80 incher Friday pm and got an a$$ whoopin today .. 4 bites by 8am fishing all alone away from the fleet .. first one never came tight , next one opened up a 10/0 7691S and swam away 20 feet from the boat (84-87 inches) ... next came a double header .. one pulled the hook after 5 minutes ... other one fought for 3 hours on a 130 with 58 pounds of drag before chafing through the leader .. he also ripped 2 rod holders from the gunnels forcing us in early for repairs .. the guys are feeling beat up

Capt Mark,
How did 1 fish rip 2 rod holders out? Aren't the guys cranking from a chair? Not being a smart a$$, just asking a question. Must have been a mean , mad SOB to tear stuff up like that. I'll be down in a few weeks to see if I can tangle with a few of them. Just want to know what I'm getting myself into.

When commercial fishing , we dont use the chair. We were fighting the fish from a swivel holder and the gunnels werent made to withstand the pressure applied with big fish with heavy drag pressure. We spent the afternoon yesterday reinforcing the entire gunnel so this wont happen again. For charter fishing , we use stand up gear or the chair. I have caught some big boys over the years and this was a good one

Capt Mark,

Sounds like you lost Capt Kevins Dream Fish. Hurry up and get a few big ones this week. I need a reason to get down there real soon.

Good Luck

Thanks for answering Capt. Mark. I'll be down mid Jan. fishing 3 days with the OU. We caught 1 about 320 lbs on stand up 2 seasons ago in the Lindy on the OU on a 50 with a 60 leader and I remember feeling like the back brace was being pulled thru my body every time the fish took a run.It took 3 1/2 hours and a lot of good boat maneuvering to land that one. Looking forward to fighting one in the chair with a 130 or at least an 80 to kind of level the playing field.
