Being a navigator by trade I figured there would be no better way to celebrate Columbus Day weekend then spending some time on the water. The plan I hatched was to go offshore Sat and to do some closer exploring and bottom fishing on Mon.
Sat we headed offshore bright and early, the crew was Me, Doug, Rj and Spence. The ride out was smooth and easy. So easy we had our first lines in the water at 0640. Unfortunately for us the trolling bite was slow we went 1 for 2 on Wahoos. We did have a pod of Dolphins hang out with us for a while giving us a good show. We also had a tweedy bird hang out on the boat for about an hour, quite a site 50 miles offshore, he drank water and ate bread crumbs from us. It was pretty cool he would land on our heads or hands and walk around just looking, I’m sure he was woundering how he was going to get to land.
Later in the afternoon we decided to switch and see what we could bring up deep dropping. Deep dropping produce a pretty steady bite, with Scamp, 5-7 lbs. Triggers, and 20+ inch pinkies. At the end of the day we ended up with a nice box of fish to take home.
Monday the plan was to do some exploring to see what we could scratch of the bottom. I’m pretty good at identifying good bottom spots, but my anchoring skills pretty much suck. So I enlisted the help of Jacky of Merry Marlin fame to see if he could show me the ropes on anchoring and any other advice he could give on catching the bottom creatures.
The crew Mon was Me, Daniel, Jacky, and Doug we left closer to banker’s hours. We went out and sabikied some bait then it was off exploring. We found some marks once we anchored we pulled triggers, and BSB, after a while we put down the grouper rigs and in about 10 minutes we our 4 man limit of Gags. We kept exploring and made a couple of more stops. At the end of the day we had a limit of Gags, about a dozen triggers, a handful of BSB, and porgys. It was another great day on the water.
The highlight of Mon for me was the video I took from start to finish of Jacky helping Daniel catch a Gag, I just wish I was a better videographer.
All in all it was a great weekend on the water with a decent mixed bag of fish and time spend in the company of family and friends. I really want to say thank you to Jacky for taking the time to come with us on our boat to teach me and help me out in my weak areas. Daniel has also started negotiations to do a straight up trade his oldest sister for Jacky.
Great report and video Jeff, I'm jealous I didn't get to go!
Just to tease Claudia, there must have been a pretty nice shark around for that big remora.....
Daniel, next time tell Jacky that he doesn't need to hold the rod, you can do it Big Boy!

Sweet report Ponce. Here is some news for ya, Ann goes back to work in NC on Nov 1 and I only have 11 months left on my contract. You know what that means. You can take the boy out of Carolina, but you can't take the Carolina out of the boy.
