I couldn’t raise a full crew for Monday, so just me and my buddy Mike decided to go out to see if we could do some damage to the Mahi. We left the inlet bright and early and cruised out at about 20 mph, the ride got better the further we went. We decided to head further south to try to stay away from the crowd.
A little over 30 miles out we hit a good temp break 73-78 with a weed line on it. We got everything out and it was on. We were so busy that in a short amount of time we had gone through my 24 pre-rigged baits and the deck of the boat look like Charlotte’s Web. It was to the point Mike was driving reeling and trying to untangle and coil used leaders, and I was rigging and keeping lines clear.
We went 1-2 hours where we really were only fishing 2-3 lines trying get caught up, when we would get one ready and in the water bam fish on. We had the area to ourselves for a good 2 hours then a couple of other boats showed up.
We only had 2-3 knock downs that didn’t get hooked and of the hooked fish we boated all but 1 or 2. There were times when we had 2 or 3 fish hooked and we just took them in order. I think the good thing was we were so busy we actually slowed down a little bite and just did 1 thing at a time. We would just decide the priority and work though it.
At the end of the day we had 17 Mahi about half gaffers, I think we would easily had our twenty if we could have stayed caught up early on when the bite was hot. But, it was a chore just keeping a couple of lines in the water.
Over all it was a great day on the water with a smooth ride in. No action shots, but a couple of pictures from the day.
