Headed out of MHC yesterday, broke the inlet at 0500. The ride out for the first 20 miles was pretty smooth, then it started to build some. It ended up being a little sporty for a boat my size. Anyway first lines in the water at about 0715 trolled 20-30 fathoms for the next 4 ½ hours without a sniff on top or the planner rod.
Talked to Merry Marlin on the radio and they said they had picked up a few on the bottom and told us to come over to join them. They also warned us the conditions where real tough bottom fishing. We had a little meeting on the boat and said we would give it a shot.
A couple of my guys yesterday where real inexperienced which came into play a little later. Plus a couple where not feeling so good after 5 hours of bouncing around like a cork in a washing machine. We sat up a couple of drifts and I had a couple of bites jigging they just came off. Then Caleb let one of the guys use his rod for a drift and he got wrapped up in the prop big time with about 100 yards of braid. He did not realize it was the prop taking line instead of the drift until it was too late. So we spent the next 30 or so minutes trying to get the prop clear. Merry Marlin was getting ready to leave, but stayed around us until they were sure we had everything up and running again, Thanks Guys.
The day ended with my first official skunk on my boat, but we all made it home safe and sound with nothing broken or lost, I only got a small cut from the prop when I was trying to clear the line. These days make the good days all that much sweeter. Plus, like I always say I know exactly how many fish I will catch sitting on the couch.
Nice talking to Merry Marlin and thanks again for hanging around until we solved our problem.
Now I’m off to take the family to the Zoo for the day.
I wish I could say I havent had many of those days. Although, most of them were before I met the Merry Marlin guys
Actually, if it werent for a stinky my last trip would have been a skunk AND a similar experience with inexperienced anglers on the boat and braid in the prop
Regardless ... getting out there and back with everyone safe and sound is not a bad thing. There are certainly worse things than a long boat ride on a beautiful CArolina fall day.
Thanks for letting us know how it went. It keeps us mortals sane to hear that it happens to everyone once in a while.
I agree with all of the above comments any day out on the water is good. The way I look at it putting fish in the box is the iceing on the cake. We had a good time we just had to work a little harder than normal.
The zoo was a good day the kids liked it and everyone had a good time. Once I check some of my pictures I may throw a few up for fun.
It was nice seeing you on the water Ponce. Sorry it was so rough and we couldn't stick close to each other to finally meet and chat some.
We'll soon do so on a calm day or better around a table...
The boss has has put me to work so I'll have to give an update on the weekend later!
