With a little weather window that finally matched a day off work. Me and Doug my buddy from work decided to head out and give it a shot. With visions of Wahoo dancing in our heads we broke the inlet at 0500. Man was it dark with the cloud cover and no moon, there was not even a horizon for the first hour. It was like driving with a black bag on your head. Our battle plan was to start south try to get on the hoo’s then head north for some deep jigging / dropping on a nice little Red Grouper and Scamp hole we found in 250ft of water. Then if time permitted head shallower and see if we could find some AP’s and whatever else felt like biting.
Trolling was very slow at 0930 we had a hit on the WWB, but it never came tight no luck on the drop back either. Mark the spot and circled the wagon next pass through WWB gets hit does not come tight about 30 seconds later the planner trips nothing. Reel in to find both Ballyhoo bit off right behind the hook, it looked like someone had cut them with a razor blade, so we were pretty sure they were hoo bites. Couple of more passes with nothing we kept heading north towards our grouper hole and right as I’m starting to clear lines the planner trips and we pull in a 20 lb. King. Not what we were looking for, but at least the skunk was gone.
Bottom fishing more of the same we had a few real nice bites both on bait and me jigging that we are pretty sure were grouper and they just came off before we got them in. I had 2 that I had over half way up when they just came undone. I did manage a big Trigger 5.5 lbs on one of Sea Draggin’s 240 gram Katana Jigs with a 10/0 hook and believe it or not the Trigger got the whole hook in his mouth.
We ended the day with 1 King, 1 Trigger, and 1 Sand Tile.
Smooth ride in cruising 30+mph till about 10 miles out and it got pretty chopping and a little dark with some lighting in the distance we got some rain, but had no real problems. On my drive home it looked like Morehead got hammered with rain parking lots and ditches were completely full of water and I saw 2 cars in water up to their windows.
Over all a good relaxing day on the water, we didn’t fulfill our dream catches, but are already looking forward to the next trip out.
Thanks for sharing! yea that fishing is tough right now Very hot Water talked to a buddy fished the same area out front yesterday ...had 4 bites..... and boated 4 hoos....

Did you ever get to go on the ocean in Dakar, the shelf there was 9 miles, sure was easier than the long run here!
