MHC 6-7 Report - Steering with the Sticks

Sometimes things don't go as planned, but at least we always have a good time. We (my dad, bking, and myself) left home friday afternoon, arrived in MHC at 11 pm, got the gear ready, went to sleep at 2 am, got up a little late and left the dock at 6. Got to the rock area around 8 am.

10 seconds before lines in, the wheel feels a little funny, and I got a baaaaaad feeling. Sure enough, we lose our steering first thing in the morning. OK, not a big deal, but no way I'm turning around, let's fish.

Fished the deep most of the day hoping for a big blue, or any blue for that matter, but she didn't come. Picked up three mahi in 80-90 fathoms on our way back, one being a nicer fish.

Took me almost three hours to get back steering with the sticks, it must have looked like I was running the boat drunk, but it could have been worse.

We are on our way home now, nothing like 20 hours of driving for 10 hours of fishing.

Best of luck to everyone fishing the Big Rock this week, it should be a good one.

Oh ya, don't ask why I ended up in the pit solo in the first pic. It was cool though, I don't get to crank in fish that often.

Nice Mahi in that 3rd pic! Thanx for the report and hope you get that steering problem fixed, sounds like that "stick thing" sucks. Congrats to put some meat in the box.

Way to make some lemonade with your lemons. I bet a little fresh mahi, a little lemon, some vodka and a little bit of that lemonade might make a nice little dinner.

That pic of Brian gaffing that fish does make it look huge. Tell that kid to get to the gym.

    6-7-08 mahi

Got our butts pounded going out Saturday morning in our 20' going to the 14 after some mahi. Reports said they had been catching them good all week. The bite was really slow and we only managed two, one pretty nice bull.

we stopped on the way back and did a little bottom fishing. The triggers were biting and Kay fished bait and I fished home made butterfly jigs. We each got 6 in pretty short order.

the ride in was no picnic either and with no curtains, wet with the west wind.
