    MHC 6/12 Offshore

I just realized I put the wrong date in the subject this was for 6/12.

Seeing the weather for Saturday there was no way I could not go fishing. The crew was me, Daniel my 9 y/o, Mike and Chip(first time on my boat). We figured we would go out see what Mahi we could find, then the second half of the day I promised Daniel we could bottom fish. I have some good spots out deep that hold big Triggers, as well as Scamps and Reds. My goal this time was to get quality Mahi and not necessarily numbers. I also talked with Nauti Natured, and Caleb who was going to be on the “floating Doc” and we said we would stay in touch and pass information throughout the day. It was nice talking with you guys out there today.

Anyway off we go, breaking the inlet at 0500 for a nice ride out, once again I picked a spot to the south that looked promising on the SST to try to stay away from the Big Rock crowd to the north. The plan was to start south work north to my bottom numbers. Hit the break temp went from 79 to 81 in about 23 fathoms and set them out. We were not on fire, but we put 7 real nice gaffers in the box with 2 being just shy of 30lbs. and 3 slingers. The special prize for the day was Daniel caught a little Wahoo, which made him, me, and his mom really happy (mom loves Wahoo).

One thing that was really nice for me today was Daniel really was involved when we were trolling. Normally he wasn’t that into trolling, I think he was intimidated by the big rods and reels. I told him he could reel whatever fish he wanted, even if we left the rod in the rod holder. Well, he was all over it he jumped on the rods as soon as there was a hit and cranked like a pro. I think he caught 2-3 Mahi and the Wahoo. He also had about half the time on the biggest Mahi, until it was time to take it out of the rod holder then Chip finished the job.

About 1130 we pulled the spread and headed to my bottom numbers. No grouper love for me today on the jig, but the other guys caught some nice Triggers, and about ½ dozen sand tiles as well as some other odds and ends. It was pretty funny watching Daniel reel in hub cap sized triggers from 200 feet of water.

Not many action shots here are a couple pictures, I have some video that is going to have to wait till after our family camping trip that starts Wed.

Another great day on the water with family and friends, and as Nick would say “Life is Good”.
