MHC 11/7 Trolling / Jigging / Bottom Bouncing

Like many I was glad to see that we finally had a decent weather wind that fell on a weekend. I asked my fishing buddies from work if they were up for a trip and the answer was let’s go. Myself, Doug, Mike, and Mitch planned an early Sat departure for ½ day trolling and ½ jigging / bottom fishing.

We broke the inlet at 0500 to a beautiful star filled sky with smooth waves. We ran out at about 30 mph and had first lines in the water at 0630. We had high hopes of spilling some Wahoo blood very shortly it wasn’t to be. We got the big goose egg trolling, well we caught mister stinky on the planner. We also ran through what I think was a school of false Albacore we didn’t see any, but in about a 2 minute period all 7 lines trip with no hook-ups and none of the baits where really damaged.

So time came to do some jigging for me and bottom bouncing for the other guys. Our first stop was our honey hole in 180 feet of water where we have caught Scamp, Reds, and every Trigger we have caught there has been over 5 lbs.

On the first drift and my first drop I catch this sweetie. She couldn’t resist my 240 gram Katana Pot Roast. She came right at 33 inches and is my personal best Gag. Not that, that is really hard to do I still don’t really have the Gag thing figured out

So we had hopes of good things to come again it wasn’t to be. We did scrape together a few more fish nothing to really speak of. We made 5 more stops working our way home. Picking up the normal bottom dwellers over all it was pretty slow for us. On the last stop Mike was catching nice Beeliners on every drop, too bad that wasn’t last week. They all went back to their homes, we made a date to come and visit them next year during the open season.

On one stop we had a pod of dolphins just hang around the boat and play for at least ½ hour. When we moved they would race to be the first in the bow wave. Then when we stopped they would swim around and under the boat from side to side playing.

Weather was great coming home as well. Overall it was a great day on the water with good friends. We are already looking forward to the next trip we can get out on.

Ponce, sounds like a real nice day. Looks like you got the gag fishing figured out enough to bring a nice on the boat. Congratulation on the meatndabox.

Pretty Gag Jeff, sorry the Hoos weren't in your area. With beeliners now closed maybe we could all attack the dogfish soon and see if we get a closure on that one too!...

No I don't tip my jigs. Some days the guys with bait catch more than me other days I catch more. Not that we catch all that many. I will say this, our experience is that most of the fish I catch on the jig are quality fish.

Nice gag Jeff! At least you got out there and got some meat in the box. I wish it was me (Mitch) on the boat and not your coworker, lol.
