Headed out Friday morning with my buddy Doug. Our game plan was to troll for 3-4 hours and end up were we wanted to do some deep dropping for Scamp and Reds, then move in for some Gags on the way home.
We broke the inlet just after 0500 headed to the general area of the 90 foot drop, from there the plan was to go to SW BR then NE BR. We figured if we got in the action we would pound that area. We had a double hook up about 15 minutes into putting lines the WWB and planner 2 Kings. We figured ok skunk is gone let’s put some Hoo blood on the deck.
About 45 minutes later the WB gets nailed again and Doug did a nice job bringing a 35 lb Hoo to meet steel. We had a couple more King bites grrrr, and that was it for trolling.
We brought 5 kings to the boat and 1 Hoo, every bite came on the WWB or the planner, with the B/W Islander WWB getting 4 of the bites. We were running a 7 rod spread and nothing else was touched total colors were B/W, P/B, R/B, and O/B.
Stopped at one of our favorite spots to drop on the Reds in about 180 feet of water at first the conditions were perfect for drifting. Unfortunately no Grouper bites at all, on either bait or jigs. Doug did manage a nice Queen Trigger, those things are very pretty that was the first one I had seen in person.
Then the conditions got too bad to drift so we headed towards home still hoping to be able to pull out a Gag. We never did try to anchor and it was just too hard to drift. We did manage a Beeliner and a couple BSB. Headed for the house satisfied that we put some fish in the box and had a good day on the water.
Jeff, it was nice to finally meet you and your family friday evening.... Your wife is one heck of a cook and introducing me to a wine I had never heard of!
