It had been a while since Patrick & Austin had gone downeast and we left after practice making it to the coast by 11.00. Wow, 4 hours in car with 4 teenagers my gosh I'm earning points... but still learning about todays world!!!
Sure glad though they like the Outdoors!!!!
The weather man had said we wouldn't be fishing saturday but we woke up to a pretty nice day and decided to give the bottom a try. Left around 8.30 after a 3rd cup of coffee and no Hurry breakfast...
The inlet was loaded with boats throwing flies as well as the usual wader guys on the beach casting to albies and spanish. A beautiful sight each end of October.
Cape Point was loaded with the surfcasters and 4X4's as we headed east through the shoals on a very high tide and SE swell. 3/4 through Jacky calls out DAD C'mere! I head into the cabin just to see white in front of us!!! What the heck?... The usual pass was like a trap of breakers and Jacky was about to turn around! A quick look at the depth and we were good, I said Blast through, reminded me of putting in a 22 Mako on the beach in southern Senegal!!!!
Headed SE into the chop thinking this is alright to fish close but we wouldn't have wanted to follow the big boats to the stream today!
Got to the hard bottom threw the anchor and did a one stop shopping... Fall fishing at it's best!
Bottom instantly produced gags. Flat line gave plenty of exercise to Austin and Patrick who hadn't held a rod in too long!
Shifted to 1/0 hooks and attacked the triggers and first bsbs showing up. It probably took an hour to limit out on these leather jackets!
Gags were fired up and angry, everything from babies to big mamas took then small hooks. Patrick showed that taking it easy on the small hook and line would bring one up this size. Real shortage of Gags they say!!!
How old is a baby this size and how old will he be when he measures 27" ?
Several small ARS came up all around 18 - 19"....
Marc got the catch of the day, a small wounded AJ that just didn't seem to worry much about swimming around with half a tail...
During our whole time anchored the albies would coming within reach of Patrick's Stingsilvers....
The Spanish liked them too and after loosing the last one Marc had to switch to a gotcha to get his share of pullage.
We stopped on our way back @ the Summerlin in hopes of a king. Pulled hooks on a couple that gave us some spectacular strikes but only got some big Fat Albies...
Came back through the shoals at low tide for a less stressful ride and Austin enjoyed some late October tanning! Gotta Love NC...
This morning was time for finishing a blind and playing with a few trout. All babies with lots of perfect size king bait bluefish... What a pity we had to go home!
The last cast in the harbor produced a baby flounder.
4 more hours in the car with 4 teenagers but life is still Good!!!!
MM
Jacques yet another great report, you guys never cease to amaze me. I hear you about the teenagers sometimes I just laugh. You are giving the boys some great expereances in life, they will have memories that will last a life time.
Great report, there is nothing like time together outdoors. Some of my fondest memories are hunting and fishing with my dad and brothers, and now my beatiful 5 year old daughter.
Another awesome report from the Merry Marlin gang! Please keep those AJ's up there----far, far away from me! The two that I caught up there 2 weeks ago were more than enough for the rest of the fall for me. Looks like it was quite pleasant on the east side yesterday.
Can't imagine a better way to spend Halloween! I'm sure the east side fish would rather y'all had gone looking for candy instead.
Congrats on the usual "stuff the boxes" catch MM crew and thanks for another fine installment of your chronicles.
