hands free heavy duty tournaquets the kind that lock themselves are best not the puny rubberband ones, Qwick Clot or some similar clotting agent. Pressure dressings, Trauma Card with treatment recomendations, and maybe a large bore IV needle with valve for possible chest injuries (tension pnemothorax), One way chest seal, and training to go with it all. It all takes up very little space and can keep some one stable till the CG bird arrives BLOOD GOES ROUND AND ROUND AIR GOES IN AND OUT ANYTHING THAT INTERUPTS THIS IS BAD,

God you just about named everything in my blowout kit i carry in iraq. For those who aren't famillar with quick clot it doesn't mix with wind!!!! but they have come out with these cool bandages that carry the stuff should be out on the market. As far as staples and stuff like that unless your remote (days away) the need for things like that without proper sanitary facilities is not well advised. The possibility for a really crappy infection is real, the battlefield truama training is the best that you can get and we don't even do much more that utlise the things that are listed above to stablize before a medevac (usally same response time as USCG) the only other thing if your able to properly apply is an IV of lactated Ringers

Asperin and tylenol, sterile scissors, iodine/anteseptic gel, band aids, small bottle of sterile water (i keep one for contact lenses) for flushing out deep wounds, sterile razor blade(i wouldnt want anyone cutting into an imbedded hook with their leatherman or their bait knife), latex or neoprene gloves, realize that if the injury dont kill ya, the infection afterwards can.

And be careful with the lidocane, it is a narcotic and a controlled substance.

    Now that's funny.
I was thinking the same thing when I read needles, scaple and staple gun.

Shane, great post this is an important topic and i see some good responses. I would do more harm than good with a scalpul so I've stuck with prepackaged first aid boxes and focused on ways to call for help (epirb, sat ph., redundant VHF).

Here is a very serious addition. CPR. With that bag, you probably know it. If not, it's worth taking a quick class on it. I don't have stats to back it up but of all the tools you need on a boat, CPR might be the one most likely to give a life a chance.

Ok a couple of more things I have not seen on here yet...

    A box of rubber gloves...

Small but very good pair of bolt cutters, good enough to cut a very large case hardened hook!

A long, flat children's shoe string. This needs to be flat. When wrapped the hook bend it will not tend to slid up or down the hook bend when you go to pull the hook out.

An O2 bottle if you can afford it and have room for it. If you have someone that has a heart attack or a diving accident this is a must.

For charter Captains as well as privately owned boats, a card with all the safety features on the boat so when you give a safety speech in the mornings you will not forget to mention something...guess I'm getting old...

    cool thread...
    MirrOlure when big fish count!
