May Blackfin Bite!!! South Florida Style... WITH PICS

Hey guys I just figured I would throw up a quick little report from late May. I know it is a little late but I have been super busy and right now I am sitting over here in Iraq making money to pay the bills again for a few months!!! Just tryin to pass the off time by thinking about some fishing!

Me, my brother and my buddy CJ took the ladies out for an afternoon fishing trip since it was flat and we were all off of work. It was a great time with some beers, publix subs, and all the action you could stand in a day of fishing. We loaded up with about 500 pilchards in Boca inlet and headed out for the 5 minute ride to 200 FSW. Once we arrived we cracked open some new cold beers, set out the kite, threw out some flatlines, a deep bait and started chucking pilchards overboard. I swear we weren't there for 5 minutes and the tunas had found us! We were covered up by busting tunas in all directions. Flat lines were getting smoked and we had a few triple headers. We definately got sharked a few times but most of the fish made it into the boat. We had a ton of kings trashing our baits too but it was still fun. 2 nice sails came ripping through our spread with sails completely flared and out of the water but they never ate our baits. Probably b/c they were too busy eating all the live chum. The girls loved it and what made it even better was that they all caught nice tunas and even some kings. We ended up leaving with 5 blackfins over 20 lbs with the biggest being a hair over 30, some small dolphin, and some kings to cut up for deep drop bait!!! We let some of the smaller tunas go which was cool too. We were doing drifts in from about 200-100 feet off of Boca in the late afternoon hours. Even caught a fat blackfin on a popper which was pretty badass!!! We ended up leaving while the fish were still biting at around 9 that night. Not a bad way to spend an evening in my book. Here are some pics. Hope you like em!

Some of the best Photos I've seen in a while!

Love the write up and the GAFF Photo is AWESOME!!!

I'd kill to be able to be within sight of land and have a catch like that..... impressive........

What size leaders and hooks do you use with the kite?? I'v never fished one I'd assume 60-80lb floro? and circle hooks? I'd love to add kite fishing to my arsenal. Other than seeing it on tv I'v never tried it but I believe it could be deadly on the Spring Cobia run here in Cape Lookout

    Thanks for the awesome report.

Thanks guys! Glad I could finally post up a report. On the kite I use a 3-5 foot section of wire and a 3/0 J hook If the sails are thick we use a 3/0 circle hook. We have a ton of kings running around and some wahoo too. Since the kite bait is on the surface flipping around then you can get away with the wire. On the flat lines we were using 10 ft piece of 40lb fluoro and a 3/0 J hook for the tunas. Hook the pilchard in the ass and freeline them out just like yellowtailing. If you freeline your live baits they are much more effective, at least I think they are. Come on down Tim!!!
