MATING OR FISHING ON OTHER PEOPLES BOATS

Since I sold my boat several months ago I have been invited to fish with several of my friends. If we are Sword fishing I will supply all the tackle and everything needed - no problem. I like taking all my own equipment. Now I hope no body take offense to this, but if we decide to go trolling or bottom fish or something that I am not prepared to deal with, seems like I can never find the right tackle on board to fish with. No pliers, No wire, no swivels, no crimps, no leader materials, no hooks and the list goes on and on. Well maybe it's not "NO" this or that, but it's not the right size sort of thing, you know what I mean, I just can't find what I need.

Lets say you were ask to run the **** pit and supply all terminal tackle and lures etc. (on someone else's boat) for a 3or 4 day trip to the Bahamas where you could possible be trolling for marlin, dolphin and wahoos...but then again you may also be bottom fishing or casting to cobias or tarpon, in other words you need to take all your chit. What kind of tackle boxes or bags would you take along to carry all your gear in ?? Something simple and as small as possible.

You free lance mates got to have some good advice on this one..

    Thanks in advance.

i got an old large duffell back i bought from murray brothers a long time ago..

i carry leaders from flouro to mono from 30-500lb..
i carry bulk spools of extra mono.. normall a 2 lbers of a few spools.
then i carry boxes of hooks, inshore, offshore, baitholders, and everything.. normally 100 of each is good
i buy the glad containers that screw on the top and i put crimps in each one.. 1000 of each.. small to large... carry all different sizes.
    2 pairs of crimpers..
carry plenty of coastlock BALL BEARING SWIVELS
carry plenty of nice spro wind on swivels and then the cheaper black barrel ones for bottom fishing.
also i carry a few packs of rubber bands, lights, glow sticks, and a first aid kit

bring 3 pears of pliers, long nose, cutters, and short nose
bring a mate safety knife and i bring 4 different knives with me
one 9 inche dexter russell wooden handle filet knife
one 9 inch offset handle seratted knife
    one 10 in serrated knife
and i bring another 9 inch thicker dexter russell..

    this covers all basis..

i also carry a box full of lures just in case from inshore bombers, to offshore stuff..

if you want an all around lure that works just about everywherei have fished and is easy to carry i would also carry a boat load of sea witches.. take up no space and you can troll these with anything behind them!!

    My main tackle box...

is about 4 feet long and two feet tall and 3 feet wide. It has rollers and weighs about 150lbs. Everything from Konas to 1/8th oz. egg sinkers and just about everything in between. It is large, but remember, you can use it as a bench

In the past if I was hired to run the pit for a trip for one day or several days, I went to the boat well in advance and did a full inventory of tackle, etc. If there was anything that I needed, I would make a list and present it to the owner/capt. More times than not, they had an account somewhere and I could get what I need. If I used my own tackle, I added that to my fee for doing my job. I love to fish, there's no doubt in that. But I also learned that you can't afford to fish for free either. Now if I'm just going with friends, etc. I brought my own tackle or helped out where I could. If I wanted to fish a different lure or rig, I asked PERMISSION first. You don't want to get on someone else's boat and completely switch it all up. We all fish differently, and to do that on someone elses boat could be offensive to them.

If I were hireing a mate I certainly would not expect him to bring the tackle, terminal gear etc. But if he showed up asking wear the pliers are I would be skeptical from the get.

You know thats basically what I have been doing for a living. I find small duffle bag great. I put different classes of stuff in ziplocks and finish off iwth a pretty well rounded rigging kit in the bottom.50- 80- 200- 400 leader, hooks from 6/0-12/0, snaps from 20-130 class stuff, sleeves, copper wire, a coil of #10 and #15 wire, crimper.
Small box with small hooks, shot, small jigs, jig heads. Bag of bigger jigs. Sometimes some pre made hi-lo rigs.
Sword side has rigs, lightsticks, bands and some lead from 12-32 oz. Lure kit includes some all around pieces, a couple bigger pieces, and a couple wahoo wire rigged baits...
Carry knife ,pliers, plastic bags too. Even a small rod belt.
All that crap will fit in a carry on sized bag but you gotta check it cause the airports have a thing about sharp shit...
Now because of the volume I do I have several kits all made up. Blue water, reef, inshore, sword, shark, big game lure, small game lure, wahoo, yellowfin, and bluefin kits... Then components of each in a single all around kit for the islands... I hate to ask "Do we have" I way prefer "where did I put that".

    Missed the point here.

I fish with a lot of different people on several different boats. Some boats are well equipped some aren't. I need some sort of system (small) that I can carry all my terminal tackle in. Tackle boxes, bags what ever, I know some of guys on this site must travel with their goodies. I would like know what works for them.

FYI, I can't tell you how many people I see fishing (in da pit)
that don't carry a pair of freaking pliers

By the way, I use a cheap Wal-Mart duffle bag to carry my gear. I just crimp a loop of leader material in the zipper handles for easy opening/colsing. Then I Wd-40 or PB Blaster the zippers after a day on the water to stop corrosion. They're only $8.00 for a med. one and $20.00 for a large. The key is lots of Bass Pro plastic lure boxes for all the tackle, I have well organized rig bags, and a small bag just for leader and line. I always have a couple dehookers, pliers, hook files of different sizes, heavy duty scissors, and a tape measure.

    Whatever swims !!!!
I usally take all my stuff with me,and look @ the boats equipment. If I see something they don't have and we're gonna need it I will tell them we need this etc.Or I will say I've got some in my bag we can use mine if you just replace what we use of mine own stuff, and that for the most part works out great. But no matter what I always carry a single bag w/ your essentials in it,pliers/crimpers/crimps various sizes/wire/floss/gloves/weights/leaders/hooks and I'll throw in a sm. box of various lures/witches/plugs.If we use/need it great if not great.
