    MATES & CLEARING LINES...

When clearing lines after a hook up, why do some mates go berserk when clearing lines. Yelling this and yelling that. Confusion ensues and tension is at max levels. Barta comes to mind, as he goes ape shit after a hook up. Yet I've seen him masterfully untangle a four rod tuna hook up with the greatest of ease. Also, wouldn't premature line clearing prohibit the possibility of catching a 2nd or 3rd fish in some cases. I've even seen mates pull teasers totally out of the water rather than bringing them up even or a little ahead of the transom for added action in the water to keep possible remaining unhooked fish alert to the boat. Does this game of fishing really need to be all out mayhem after a fish is hooked? Excitement not withstanding.

Most of the time the yelling is caused by excitment which is why we go fishing. The day the excitment is gone you should just stop fishing because thats what its all about.

I totally agree Whitey, the excitement generates the yelling. That's why I said excitement not withstanding... I'm talking about paranoid guys that make that excitment go out the scuttles with every command....... It's like they're out of control all the sudden. To me, a mate should always be in control. Or at least fake it.

I hate yelling on hook ups...it creates panic. When a fish is tip wrapped or a crew member is in deep trouble, how is your crew gonna know if you're yelling and screaming every time you get a bite....kinda like crying wolf...

Actually, I don't have a technique. I'm usually the paying charter. Honestly, I don't know the 1st thing about mating and rigging. But I do know how I like a mate to react, not that I can dictate that though. He'll react how he's gonna react. I just like calm and cool, that's all. Shows control, confidence.....

I've also seen captains go nuts reacting to possible hookups too. Throws everyone into a tizzy. Especially if you have a calm mate. Scares the crap out of kids too if they're onboard. As they have zero idea of what's going on. They might even think the boats sinking or something........ Hell, I had a friend drop a brand new bag of pork rinds over the side once in all his startlement.

I've been on some charters where the mates goe ape sh*t and start yelling. Others they don't. We do alot of King Mackerel Fishing and we get excited when we get a fish on but its an unspoken excitement. Everyone knows what to do and which lines to get in first so there is no need to go crazy. Works well for us as we rarely lose a fish to entanglement or cut off from another line.

People who yell at the angler or mate only fish once on my boat. We are all out there for fun, and it's no fun having somebody yelling at you when you're trying to have fun.

The best mate/ Captain I know has never yelled and has probably caught over 2,000 billfish.

That said, people who don't get it or don't care about catching fish also usually only fish with us once. We are serious about catching.

That's exactly how I feel when chartering. If it happens, it happens once on that particular boat. There are plently of other boats out there to check out and fish from that play their cards right.

    Nice name by the way.....
