I agree also, before I went to work for the Navy, I did tree work, with my uncle. we had became such a team, that when he was in the tree, he didn't have to speak, I knew what he wanted, and before I could become a good climber, I had to master being the ground man. So therefore, once I became a climber, I knew what the ground man expected, and my uncle being a climber, knew what I expected, it worked out great, until he fell and died. moral of the story is, it's all about team work.

JUST REINFORCED TODAY
I got to fish with Jake, Overboard a good buddy of mine today. Maybe our last trip together before he gets shipped to Pendelton. We fished a 26 Mako, the owner invited us to come because he doesn't know how to do it, anyway. We had Jakes's Commanding Officer and his son onboard. We had a fair catch for the day, 31 mahi, all slingers. The CO and son had a ball cranking them in. The CO was very eager to help wherever he could and by the end of the day he was setting out the prerigged baits, he was having a ball. Jake at the helm and us in the pit and the owner in the rack. No worries, he just gets in the way, Psychiatrist! Great day, heading in. About 10 miles from the inlet the Low Oil alarm goes off...... do we have more onboard? Well yyyyeeeeaaah but we can't get to the tanks unless we disconnect the batteries and pull the tanks. WTF? I crawled in the stern and was able to lift one of the tanks and it 1/3 left, that's enough to get in. We get to the public ramp, holiday weekend, 3:30 you know what we found. No one wanted to take the boat in, the current was ripping and we had no choice but to go in on the Lee. I am at the Helm I give directions to Jake and John, I go in bow first someone jump on the dock and cleat it and when the ass comes in someone take the stern. Jake jumps off, I go hard over to swing the stern and the owner is standing there with the coil in his hand looking for someone to throw it to. WTF. Jake cleat the bow and get this stern line. The current is ripping, we have a boat on the down side. The owner is barking out orders, I am at the helm trying to hold it over and the whole crew is confused. An easy situation made into a cluster. The man at the helm gives the orders, PERIOD! This wasn't a charter but John said I wouldn't go back out with him again. They had a great day only to have it shot at the very end.
Liv2, I was an Operating Room Tech in the USN, I know what anticipation is all about, knowing what the want before they need it.
Wound Up, you hit it on the head. I've seen a couple Mates on the waterfront climb the ladder and I know the Capt's they have taken over for had taught them well. I love the pit and maybe some day I too will climb the ladder and remember! It is a fun Job but ........... you have to love it to be good at it!
