    Making Bait...

Today was another one of those arduous days of making bait for a day in the near shore Grouper mines. 2 throws of the cast net and all the pinfish Mike LPL and I could use for the day. Next was the job of finding Mullets. 4 more throws and that job was done but we did have an interesting critter in the net...a 6" Barracuda... cute huh...

As Mike and I headed out, Bait was every where on top from 4 miles and out. On our 3 stop, the Sardines came to the boat and hid out in the shadow of the boat. We took advantage of this so we could put another kind of live bait on the boat for some more "Grouper Crack" The pictures tell "the rest of the story"... As the schools of Sardines would come by the water was full of thousands of scales from the bait. There were also a few Cigar Minnows mixed in the with the Sardines.

Sometimes I get as much enjoyment out of this kind of thing as I do fishing for the targeted specie...enjoy

Oh ya, one more thing, we did have a great day in the Grouper mines even though we did not catch as many as yesterday, we still had as much fun as 2 of us could legally could have...

Sorry, but somehow, I missed taking pictures of the catch, must be slipping in my old age... what is it CRF...well something or other...

Very cool pictures Lee! Hate I missed such a beautiful day on the pond. Looks like those baits were just about right for "gag crack". I'll give you a shout when I get back in town Wednesday.

    Lee:
I used to catch a few 'cudas like that one in my cast net on Masonboro Sound--they wouldn't ever live in our aquarium though. Seems like I gilled 'em in the net most of the time....probably not conductive to their survival when you have to dig 'em out of the net.

Awesome pics Lee. I like catching the bait almost as much too.
In high school Oceanography, my class went on a field trip. My buddy Nick and I used a seine net around the marsh grass and caught all sorts of cool stuff. Among the critters we caught was a rare catch. We caught a Barracuda, about 8 inches long. No big deal except for the fact that we don't get cudas up here. We later found out that it was a different species of Barracuda than the stinkys we all love to hate. The fish we caught was Northern barracuda Sphyraena borealis. Ever heard of em?
    Great pics and report.

Geoff, no I have never heard of them, all though I know that there is more than 1 speci of them. Matt, thanks. Looking forward to finding out this little guy. He had bit down on the net and did not want to let go. He did swim away just fine...

Got ya on that one... its my shadow as I was taking the pictures on the sunward side of the boat so the bait would show up. What makes it so strange is me holding the camera near the water to get the best shots. Not looking throw the view finder, I was just "snapping" shots and out of 50 or 60 shots, this is what I thought were the best. I have found that you need to take lots of pictures doing something like this so that you can get a few to come out. I am very picky as to what I like in my pictures. Out of 5 to 10 thousand a year that I take, I only find 5 or 10 a year that I think are worthy...

As for the rod, very cool little rod. Some people hate them and some lovem. I love mine. The best thing about it is the Sabiki rig reels up inside the rod so you never get hooked by the tiny little gold hooks. While in the car its priceless by not getting tangled. They make one for conventional
reels and one for spinning reels, I have the latter. I need ot run out for a while, but will take some pictures when I come back...
