Lil' Biscuit (Jason) and I run into Matt (JMS-ILM) at the boater's world yesterday. Talked about skipping church today and going fishin'. Matt got Jason all excited about chasing big gaffers, so the plan was hatched to go trolling.
In the water by 5:00 AM, with two dozen bionic mediums rigged and salted. Lines in by 6:00 AM 30 miles offshore, 100 feet, pretty blue water, scattered grass, fliers here and there. Early morning sun hidden behind some clouds, light east chop. All seemed promising. 2 hours of pulling fine baits got us 5 or 6 bites. A couple of kings and a little tunny (on ice he went, just in case!!!). I was running the boat offshore over prime bottom and bait marks, looking for a made up weed line or some flotsam to target. I finally found both. A half mile long made up line and a 5 gallon floating paint can near it. After several passes at both, it became painfully obvious that no matter how much we beat that horse, he wasn't coming back to life. The dolphins pulled a disappearing act on us. East is least?
I had a couple boxes of frozen minnows and that little tunny on ice, so when Matt said "you got any bottom fishing numbers near here?" I had the trolling stuff stowed in 60 seconds.
First stop was dead. Pinkies & grunts. Could this be that day? I refused to think negative thoughts, but my little fishing buddy was not feeling good and the fore-casted E, SE 10 or less was quickly becoming a "fresh" 15 at 58 degrees (dang NE). I had a set of black bass numbers near so we made a quick stop to get some dinner and be on our way.
The oily little tunny cut bait finally got 'em stirred up on the bottom and some nice bass came in the boat

All the commotion got the attention of some nearby gag and red groupers and before long there was a respectable catch in the box. Who ever said those little tunnies are good for nothing?
It was now just after noon time and the 3 foot chop was steep and foaming. i had marked a couple of spots while trolling that I really wanted to investigate. Another decent stop with some small scamps and reds. Better fish were there for sure, but the very rough bottom and poor bait conspired against us.
Turned her toward home in the early afternoon. That big American red or giant hog of my dreams will have to wait for another day. In the Wrightsville waterway we saw lots of activity on the Bite Me, so we stopped by to say hello to the all Sportfishermen.com Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament crew. Court was in session and the most honorable WAHOONBOX was presiding. I hope these guys bring it all home!
We threw our catch on the dock for a photo and much to our surprise, a couple of the fish were still alive!

Lil' Biscuit and Matt with today's best grouper

I hope that the preacher man will cut me some slack for spending Sunday offshore with my 11 year old and good friend Matt!
Cheers

Anthony's Ark is a blowboater
Tearing them up on the bottom as always, no matter how rough and windy it is. Great catch Nick! I was gonna head out there today but didn't feel like taking a beating with those winds you spoke of that came up.

Damn Nick you did it again. Now this boaters world thing is unacceptable
West Marine is the place to go.
I even saw Lee in there today.

Nick- your preacher might cut you some slack if you share some fish with him.
Good work and congrats on spending a nice day with your son and your friend.

im sitting here at the office picking off all the bass scales stuck to my body in random places....took me an hour and a half to cut those fish.
i think we might could have scratched out a mahi or two if we would have kept at it.....but the images of those king macks destroying my meticulously rigged baits and tackle haunts me. we had a little snake sky all of 12 feet on the flat line with a squid daisy chain.....he was so high in the air the whole daisy chain was dangling below his green slimy ass as he munched on a bionic medium and a brand new Bluewater Candy Mini Jag lure.....bastardos!
despite it all, i think we scratched out a damn fine catch, biscoto. thanks for having me along once again. big J will get them next time....just leave the banana boat sunscreen on the hill!

Nice job on the bottom there guys. We played hooky as well and were rewarded with a fair mahi catch and rough seas for the ride in.
