    Lure rigging single stiff rig?

When rigging marlin lures I currently use an offshore loop with a crimp above the loop and a second crimp below the lure head for spacing. All of my lures are rigged liked this. I am pretty sure this is frowned upon though. More clarity on this would be helpful.

With this said it would be easy enough to use a single hook stiff rig with cable and heat shrink to hook on my new lures if this is better.

My question with this rig though is how do you properly and most effectively connect your flouro to the cable in this situation? Any insight on the best hookups whether stiff rig or not would be helpful. Thanks again.

Josh, I normaly use a single hook semistiff. I dont use the offshore loop. I use chaffe protection. I rig the same way you talked about but I twist the mono before crimping the second crimp (the one closest to the lure head). I then take a piece of #15 wire and double it and place it through the eye of the hook and lay it alon the sides of the twisted mono equal on both sides so it goes all the way to the stopper crimp. The wrap the whole thing in electrical tape. Not an inch thick with the tape I like to use just enough to stiffen it but not too much that it still isnt flexable. I like the hook stiffenough that it isnt bouncing all over or back over the leader, but not stiff enough to act as leverage on the hook. The stifer he rig the more action it takes from the lure, the stiffer the rig the easer it pulls the hook if the fish changes direction and pulls from a different angle. You want to be in the happy medium. Good luck

Pitch, I appreciate it a ton.
Can I use something generic for chaff protection or do I have to buy it at a tackle store?

Also with your wire do you bring it back up into the stopper crimp and crimp it with the mono as a toothproof thing because otherwise wouldnt it cut your mono just taped next to it?

You can buy Ancor shrink tubing as chafe guard. Thats is what I use and it works great.

I buy the chaff tubing at OFF the Hook Bait and Tackle here in Cape May it is very In expensive. I don not put the wire in the crimp, It is just through the eye of the hook and next to the leader.

    single hook rig

This set up works awesome. For a standard wide range single hook rig that you can put plenty of heat on, the 10/0 Jobu is your hook, the Hays 10/0 is great too, but a bit smaller than the Jobu and too small for the standard wide range. To rig it first take 7 inches of 650lb. stainless cable, slide on brass sleeve, then 1 inch of small chafe tube, then Jobu, pull all tight and crimp. On other end do the same minus the hook. Take 3/8in. shrink tube and measure piece that will cover from just past hook eye to right below loop at other end and shrink it. Now slide your leader thru(400/530lb.) lure, slide on aluminum hi-seas d or c sleeve(respectively), 1 inch piece of large chafe tube, and run through loop on hook rig. Pull tight and crimp. Now tape the two interlocking loops so their tight(decorator repair tape works the best). This rig works best when the hook stays pegged in the up position in the lure. Take some waxed thread and serve about two inches of half hitches up on your leader from your last crimp and slide softhead down over hitches to peg lure in place. Thelengths here will get your hook point just outside the rubber. And for gods sakes at least put out on 80! Good Luck with it!!!

clt capt- Thanks, I had seen the Melton post upon some research it just never explained how to put your mono to the end of the cable. Surely you cannot connect it just to the cable and thimble.

I think I need to just use chaffe guard like everyone is talking about I just didnt know where to get it and didnt know if I could use something at the hardwarde store.

dknotts explanation was pretty close to what I was looking for.

Don't use flourocarbon for your marlin lures. Flouro can shatter, splinter & you will lose your lure.

I make my stiff rigs STIFF. I use coat hangers, small diameter steel, anything that will be difficult to bend. they are very unforgiving to the fish too.

they don't pull once they are in.
