Looking for some methods to rig flying fish
I picked up some flying fish for the Barta Tournament. I've never fished with them before and would like to know some methods to rig them. Thanks for your suggestions.

I think Admin is going to let me have this space
As they don't last real long, at least at the higher speeds that I troll I usually rig them for pitching . That usually is done like a mullet...
We used to sometimes pin rig them like hoos when I was working the keys years back. The dolphin were so thick there was little time for them to wash out...
I have seen guys go back and rig them like mullet but add a piece of #15 wire through the back that they tie the wings to using rigging line or floss...
I know not much help but its a start...

Thanks for the advice Deep and Box. I hear what you're saying Box, just my approach to this tournament is probably a little less serious than most. I have a chance to take a kid that has never fished offshore. I realize the importance of this tourney to some of the boats, but for some of us, it's a little bit of a different deal. Don't get me wrong we will fish hard and give it 110%! My main goal is to put this 12 year old on a big fish. He is bitten hard by the fishing and hunting bug, but his saltwater time is very limited- he lives in Idaho.
I will be fishing Thursday as well (provided weather cooperates) if I can get the flyers to pull good Thursday, then I would try some in the tournament.
I've always wanted to try some flyers. These baits are really small and I know how to rig them with a sewn-bridle type rig like you can do mullet. I was also thinking the dolpin would not be able to stay away from these little baits, and it's something a little different.
Box, will you be fishing ballyhoos only or will you be pulling other baits such as spanish, mullet, squid? Last year I pretty much stuck to ballyhoos and didn't do too bad-caught some nice gaffers and released a big sail and had some whiteys in our spread. Fishing on a 30' boat.

I don't see why you could'nt rig them just like a ballyhoo. Hook through the gill plate and out the stomach. Pop out the eyes. Run a chin weight and use monel through the eyes and up though the mouth. I ordered a pack from baitmasters when I got my hoo's in last week. They had them double hook rigged. 1 hook facing up and 1 hook facing down.
Go to the link below and click on the flying fish. You will see how they have it rigged.

OKAY JIM.....SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE ON TRACK ....SOMETIMES I DON'T KNOW WHAT EXPERIENCE LEVEL GUYS ARE ON
KEEP IT SIMPLE...BALLYHOO SPANISH IS MY AGENDA......DREDGES....
THE BILLFISH BITE WAS UNREAL YESTERDAY WITH MANY BOATS HAVING FOUR FLAGS.....
WEATHER LOOKS OUTSTANDING SO FAR
THEY CAN BE RIGGED JUST LIKE A BALLYHOO WITH A POST....MONEL.....WRAPS
LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING YOU AT THE BIG TOP.......

Thanks for the input. I was thinking a pin rig would swim better than the dead-mullet/ sewn bridle rig I learned 25 years ago. I would think the baits could be pulled faster. I love the exchange of info on this site. I've been lurking a few weeks and learning. Thanks for a great site.
