Help a brother out, please. Going to be in the sound this weekend or next, and I am wondering if the drum are still hanging around? Any shrimp to be had cast-netting around shore? Not looking for hotspots, just a general idea of whats happening...

All the green tailed shrimp you want right now in the mouth the creeks and the all of the coves around the Neuse.
If you are interested in the old drum I would call www.Extrememeasurescharters.com or Down East guide Service if you want to book at trip.
They all might be booked up for the season, but you never know if they have a cancellation they could work you in.
Bite is still going strong. Should be around till the beginning of October. Fish will be gathering back up in big schools in the next few weeks and grubbing before they head back out the inlets. They have gotten back into love mode with the full moon in the past few days.

Brian about summed it all up. I might throw in that Tarpon are still in the upper river as salinity are still high even with the storm. Water temp is still hanging about 85 degrees. Also keep in mind that when the wind goes to the N by NE, the Old Drum will snap.
One more thing to remember is once Red Drum reach about 36" they only grow about 1/4" a year, so a 40" Old Drum will be about 40 years old, 50" will be about 50 years old. These are the breeding stock, give them a lot of TLC...
Thanks for the input, Capt.Lee. We rarely take the big boys out of the water anymore. If its someone's first one, we might do the "across the legs" pose, but usually we release them in the water alongside the boat. Got LOTS of respect for those fish!!
Now tarpon, thats another thing. Have'nt landed my first one yet...
