    Livebaiting deep and wide

    Hi there

Im running a charter boat out of Tauranga New Zealand, specializing in Saltwater fly fishing, gamefishing on spin gear and vertical jigging for yellowtail kingfish. Im and obsessed live baiter, and im very keen to learn about your techniques to cover more water. Everyone in NZ livebaits on the surface only, or maybe 1 down 10 meters or so. In my mind if i could run 1 or 2 on Old Saltys planers and 1 or 2 on kites i would increase my chance of bumping into a marlin. I use 3-5lbs tuna or 2-4lbs kahawai (looks like a mackerel) bridle rigged with 10/0 game circles.
Can anyone help me out with a smart and simple system with planers and kites please.
    Great forum......

I would use a downrigger instead of a planer, at live bait speeds downriggers seem to work better for me.

Kite system is a whole new discussion. I will type a fuller post when I get home from work. In short, use swivels to space release clips and only use 1 kite until you are very experienced, then you can use two.

First let me welcome you to Sportfishermen.com. Nice to see another New Zealander on here as we have a few and enjoy their pics from your part of the world. BOX should be able to answer all your questions concerning planers. I live bait fish all the time and like N2 we use a downrigger ball. It seems to work better for the type fish we are targeting(King Mackerel). As for kites I see a lot of people using them but they are anchored and chumming to get the fish to the boat. Good luck and I look forward to seeing pics or your catches.

Ok, so ill get a downrigger instead of a planer. I have a mate that is using a "Everol" downrigger. Like like a solid built thing. Has anyone got any pros or cons about this rigger?
What type of weight would you use? i have seen round weights, weights with wings and all sorts?? pros and cons again....

Id like to run 2 livies of the same rigger. Would you recommend using rubber bands or release clips?

This coming season a big blue or a big black will have to surrender to the mighty Daiwa Saltiga. Does anyone over there chase gamefish on spinning reels?

I think the Stella might not do it on a big broadie. Im keen to try one on the mighty Saltiga though. The one in the photo was on an 80W standup. Hooked 3am and landed 8½ hours later.....
