BAITBOY...... NOW THIS IS HOW GREAT FISHING FORUMS ARE BUILT!!!! VERSATILITY! A BROAD RANGE OF THE MACABRE...THE UNUSUAL!!! I TIP MY RIGGERS TO THIS PICTURE...STATE OF WASHINGTON?
I REALIZE THAT MANY ON HERE WILL NOT EVEN KNOW HOW TO ASK QUESTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO STURGEONS......SO BEAR WITH US INCLUDING SELF ......BUT WE DO WISH TO HEAR THE TRICKS OF THE TRADE !!
Here in Washington and Oregon we have a slot limit. 42-60 inches for a keeper. during our shad run which gets to over 6 million fish, the large "oversize" fish start to concentrate. we go catch bait ie shad 2-5 lbs and rig them up on 11/0 barbless. send them down to the bottom of the river and wait....Normal rigging for the oversize is a dacron leader snelled to the hook. insert in the soft spot behind the head in and out through the bony part of the head. then I thread the bait in half hitches just under the backbone with the first one close enough to the hook to cinch the shank tight to the back then go all the wat to the tail and thread the tail end so that the tagline is running right along the spine. Cut off all the fins to reduce drag and spinning. Wait for the rod to lay over and Hang on... I think the largest we've gotten in was around 10 ft long not sure what the weight was probably around 3-400 Lbs
We cant remove the oversize from the water so the weights are usually just an extrapolation from the length.
