    A little NJ yellowfin action

Left Saturday night for the Hudson canyon Yellowfin in 0 visibility new moon night , Thought I was on a simulator ride for 5 hours. Dropped lines in at pre dawn hours . Total 2 bites and landed both. Yellowfin 50 pound range give or take a few. One on a green bird with green trailer, the other on red Archer Bar. Ended the day with a box of tiles . Had 1 White come up on a Spreader but couldn't switch him.
Only got a few still pics but Enjoy the Blood video when
I figure out how to load it

    question

I know this has been beat to death, but I thought from reading that the verticle lines on the back half meant big eye not yellowfin? I'll be the first to admit I don't know crapola about the this so don't take it the wrong way, after all I know salmon and I am hoping to soon know my tuna, congrats on the catch!

My third offshore trip of the year and the first YFT. Way to put us on the fish Hotshot1

Thanks for taking us Phil. It's always a pleasure to fish with you.

I didn't take many pictures either but here are a couple.

Funny quote of the day. One of the guys that came on the trip hasn't done much fishing and on our way out we hit a set of waves that were rather large. He looked at us and said...."this is like takeing a 42 foot motor home and jumping it" I laughed my ass off when I heard that.

Identification can be tough.... especially when dead. The easiest way for me to tell is that the big eye is noticeably stockier. The Bigeye's anal and dorsal fins are smaller (first dorsal is yellow)and of course, they have bigger eyes.

As far as I have seen, they both have the vertical lines but the YFT has a noticeable yellow, horizontal b line on its back. It also has the longest fins of all the tuna species.

Reading that back to myself, I dont know if its helpful or more confusing but ... there you have it.

Great report and photos guys! Thanks for sharing! Glad to see the SuperBars are working for you.

Only fool-proof way to tell a Yellowfin from a Bigeye is to cut em open and check the liver.

Easy to do and much more "digital" than looking for markings, etc...

-If the liver has striations (lines) its a Bigeye.
-If the liver is smooth its a Yellowfin.
