A LITTLE MORE ICE FISHING
Heading home on tractor Wed. morning from digging yet more of the d### snow so neighbors could get out I meet the boys in waders and full fishing gear. Told them stay off of the ice, they inform me they are going after fish in the creek feeding the pond. Well the fish are cold and the geese honking on the river below got there attention so off the went. Exploring around they found where the beavers(fur bearing) were cutting 1/2"-1" saplings leaving a sharp point. Hmmm, they ponder, maybe we can spear fish? Turns out the wear able to gig 3 blue gill, 1 madtom, 2 creek chub and several other crustaceans to feed the fish in the backyard pond. I don't have many photos but these should help the scale with the ice covered pond in background.

Box: A madtom is a type of catfish (I think) that stays under 10". Boys have a couple in a tank i'll try to get pictures. We find them in small creeks and is deadly on Smallmouth on the James River. Thanks Todd
