I'm a bit of a collector when it comes to Cameras. I have around 10 compact ones. The best waterproof by far that I've used is the new Canon D10 http://www.canon.com.au/products/cam...ershotd10.aspx. Bit of a piss off because I don't have one of my own..... yet! It also takes high def video.

Panasonic also have a great little waterproof compact that also takes high def video. I haven't used it, but a camera junkie mate raves about his.

THe video aspects of these small, cameras is amazing, but a bit of a trap as holding one of these small cameras to take reasonable smooth vid is near impossible.

The Olympus Waterproof Compacts miss out in that you can't see the screens clearly in direct sunlight, and almost not at all with sunglasses on. (Is this just me?)

Nearly all modern compacts over 6mp take great shots.

None of the compacts I've used are fast enough for jump shots. Many will take lots of shots a second (burst speed) but the resolution drops massively.

For sure the DSLR's like Canon and Nikon are spectacular cameras. I chose a Canon D40 with L series lenses over Nikon purely on weight because I travel lots and the Canons weigh a lot less. There are newer ones that are better still, some also take full high definition video. Because of the cost of lenses these are very expensive set-ups, but they are as fast or faster than film cameras and the shots are spectacular.

Because of sunlight factors getting a camera with a viewfinder as well as a screen is ideal, but hard to find. There are no waterproof compacts that I know of that have a viewfinder. I'm sure one will show up around 5 minutes after I get my own D10.

    My new one...

I'm really happy with. It's a FUGIFILM WP Finepix. I took it to Africa and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the photos. It's waterproof to ten feet and takes pretty good video. It was 149.99 at best buy. With a 4 gig card I get an hour of video. It's handy like someone said earlier just to leave in your shorts and not to worry about until you want to take a picture. It's super simple to use.
