If it is Momoi blue diamond line supposedly it will break down "rot" if it comes in contact with soap. If you washed your reels with soapy water after fishing and got the soap on the line then that would accelerate the rot. I have a few buddies that found this out the hard way. They started wiping down the outside of the spools with a soapy rag being careful not to let the soap get to the line and the problem went away. Of course if it is not Blue Diamond you were using disregard what I just typed

Exactly JB is great stuff. We go straight JB to a 30-50ft windon. WE dont even use a topshot anymore.....Mark

OK, I have been using this so called greater than white bread mono with unbelievable breaking strength line that is supposed to be the top of the line line (and it cost about twice as much as the rest ). I label all my reels when they are spooled up so I know how old the line is at any given moment. Now keep in mind I'm not running a charter boat so I don't fish every day. Generally we swordfish about 5 to 8 time a year when I bring out my wlrs 50 w/60# mono. Today I was re-rigging some tackle and my line was breaking as I tied on swivels This line is 1 1/2 yr old and has been fished no more than 10 times and it is rotten, yea rotten as hell. Had I of been crimping instead of tieing my lines I would have never known it had gone bad.

Now my question. I know the line manufactures can tell how old the line line by the sequel#. But can they design it to rot in 2 years? Even though my line has been on the reel for less than 1 1/2 I really don't know how old the line actually is. It could have been on the shelf for 3 years and on the reel for 1 1/2 and it's way pass it usable life. It seems like some of these "better lines" are designed to rot. Line is to dam expensive to have to be replaced after 10 days of fishing. For a charter boat thats new line every 1 1/2 weeks

I have got a 3000 yd spool that I bought about 1 1/2 years ago, it feels good and strong but will go to crap in 6 months ?

What's been your experiences ?

Capt Rick
and it's what will be wrong with mono tomorrow. Mono does not last...If I'm fishing 8 times a year, first off I wouldn't even consider filling a reel with mono but if for some reason I did I would change it at least twice a year whether it looked like it needed it or not. If you just bought the spectra you would save money in the long run by not having to throw it away. It also cuts through the water about 20 times better and you can sword with less weight and it stays at the depth you set it.

like mike said, guys you should be changing your line at least once a year anyway! Thats why so many peope are going to braid with the top shots, its much easier and cheaper over the long run to only change out the top shot every year.

ANDE is the heat as far as mono goes. Buff said it though. There are inherent problems with mono just because it's mono. Saying you change your mono once a year whether it needs it or not...is like saying you brush your teeth every week whether they need it or not.

How can you fish a season and NOT change out topshots or mono..??????? Sure it's expensive, so is everything else. What's the only thing between you and the tackle destroyer on the other end? Mono does break down, it always will, doesn't matter what friggin brand you buy..Sun, Soap, temperature changes, stress, age, SALT!..whip those in over a year mono goes bad. Surely some may age better than others..but if your serious..change it out every season or twice if you fish hard..in the scope of the expenses string is cheap.

We and another boat, bought a commercial grade line winder used. Made the chore at least half enjoyable, perhaps if you get some guys together and split up the expense, it will make life easier. Of course it's alot easier to drop the reels at your local shop and have them whip it on.

We tried the line in question one season in Hi-Vis yellow. Wouldn't knot up for crap and just acted strange with bimini's, didn't even make the season, it got changed out back to Jinkai Smoke blue.

Whatever floats your boat, it's just string..but fresh string always makes for peace of mind. I like that.

I have JB on my elecrtics now going on 3 years and it's like brand new.

JB may be the ticket, but I got 9 wlrs 50's $$$$

What's the life of JB when used as backing ? And if I'm using a 80# Ande top shot what would be the proper size JB to use (a good fit for 80# Ande to slide into) ?
