    Letting deer walk

I am not much of a hunter so I don't understand some of the hunting rituals and practices that go on. I think that it is kinda cool to to hear every single one of my hunter friends talk about all the deer they let walk. I have been in the field maybe a dozen times and have never even had a shot. I don't think I would let him/her walk if I did. Why - probably because I don't undderstand why you let one walk. I kinda liken it to fishin. I could just imagine the dropped jaws if Captain Brian pulled up to a tree trunk and looked down the bridge and shuck his head. "man their's a mess of dolphin down their but Their not what were looking for, lets let em swim". My big ass let em swim. half the guys that would let that same deer walk would do everything but drop a cherry bomb under that log and throw a cast net over the dead floaters. Or lets take a chunker from the darkside. This year we had a nice run of yellowfins that would swarm the boat and you could just pitch the bait to em. I would just love to hear the reaction to a captain or angler looking down on a dozen tuna streaking through the chunks with pitchbait in hand and say - Cool tuna but not really what we're looking for, Let's let em swim. Shit - let em swim! I've seen anglers do everything but break out the rolling pin to get that extra 1/2 inch out of an undersized fish. Just some observations on a snowy day.

On another note about the Hunting/fishing thing. This year I was able to take my son to Ernie's farm for youth Goose Hunt day. What an experience! My son got his first goose and we all had a great time. But while sitting in the pit and watching soooo many geese come almost within shooting range I had to wonder how many tuna, mahi and billfish swim into our spread just to get spooked and swim off. It is exciting to see the geese come in and fly off. I bet we would be jumping out of the pit if we could see how many fish we actually raise but never see.

Bill, I often wonder that myself. Especially w/ billfish. I remember running right to where a good marlin bite was the day before on two different occations this summer and not see a billfish all day. W/o a flying bridge to see better, I wonder how many are even raised that I never see. More importantly I wonder how many come within 10' or so of the surface and take a look but never go for the bait. Also, how many times have you thought for a split second-- " was that a bill I just saw for a split second-- naw, I'm just hoping too much".
Did your son get a goose at Ernie's

Glenn - Nicholas has a streak going on that I'm not sure is good or bad. He shot his first deer with his first shot. but has not hit a deer since. he shot his first dove with his first shot and has maybe hit one or two others since. and at Ernie's he shot his first goose with his first shot and missed the next 5.

I once went 14 for 17 in one day on venezuela on whites and blues. I missed 3 sailfish. I also went 3 for 3 on blues down their again missed 3 sails. In Islamorada I went 0 for 2, 0 for 5, 0 for 3 and 0 for 1 on sails. I have come to the conclusion that it is not that I don't want to catch sails. I have just decided to "let em walk"

Letting them walk is a numbers thing. In a mako tournament you're allowed one fish a day. So when that 60-70 pound fish that may be legal gets on you let em swim in hopes of popping something big. With deer you have a limit. In Jersey its two for the season and I gave a tag to a friend that left me with one. In hindsight I should have shot the one yesterday as I haven't seen another since. Ducks have limits too. So there are days you let theones that taste like bunkers fly by and wait for the yummier varieties...
As for running from certain fish. That sometimes happens. If you're sailfishing and small king mackerel are tearing up your $100 a dozen baits, you move. If I'm at Chub and I see Dolphin even big ones I try to steer clear. Kills valuable billfishing time and bait. There you will see them find you any way...

Time for a little honesty. If I let a fish swim or a deer walk its not 100% about being a sport and letting em grow. Theres a whole lot of greed involved looking for that bigger one...

I certainly understand moving because you are getting eaten up by kings or peanuts. that makes perfect sense. But you are sailfishing. So that is not your target. I understand leaving tuna during a billfish tournament. You are billfishing. Limits make sense as well. Like I said I don't understand the hunting thing and I am slowly learning.
