    OH Quality Deer Management

Letting Smaller Bucks walk is "THE ONLY WAY" to achieve the age structure that it takes to achieve the true "TROPHY" size rack. Young deer don't grow large racks and dead deer don't grow!!!!!!!!!! As for Does it's a numbers game. How many deer can a proticular area carry? nutrition is a must for a quailty heard. Man Don't get me started on this one ! This is my game and I could go on forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me try an splain it for ya Bill.

    Never and I mean never:

    1. Let any waterfowl fly by that are in range.
    2. Never let a varmit walk by in range.
    3. Never leave fish to find bigger or better fish.
    4. Shoot all your shells at every dove you see in range.

Taking all of the above into account as long as its leagl open up on them.

I let deer walk for several reasons. I either want to shoot a wallhanger or the smallest possible deer I can find. I either want to eat it or show it off. With fish especially offshore its not like you get a good look before hook up. I only hunt with a bow at this point in my life. After hunting many years with a gun and the ability to shoot 400 plus yards there aint much sport in it. When bow hunting if it is in range you can check out the rack, see the spots, or even look for ticks etc etc etc! A 8 point 12 inches wide has great potential next year. If meat is that important to ya shoot a doe. Leave the little ones to become big ones and then call me I would be glad to shoot them for ya!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it makes any sense... Letting that small six wasn't about sport it was greed... Wanting bigger. When I didn't see any more I paniced and drilled little rat to make sure I got at least one. Ok so its no monster but at least its one... There are those that truly have a reverence for maintaining a high minimum but being limited to just a couple days of northern deer hunting a year, I don't have that luxury...
Again ... Another analogy of what it is at least in my case is like the one bluefin limit. Lets say you know there are a bunch of 50- 100 class fish around, do you box that first 28" fish?

All the answers are good. I guess I liken it back to the days when we would release a fish and My brothers and I could watch my parents almost die of a coranary right there on the deck. Hell my mother still has a hard time watching me throw back a croaker. She gets this said puppy dog look on her face and talks about how good they are to eat. I lean over and open the cooler and explain that the 67 croakers she insisted on keeping are also good to eat. My parents never let us hunt but they taught us to fish for food first and fun second. But I certainly understand why it is that you guys let them walk. It makes perfect sense to me.

    Karl - bring some jerky

    Let it walk?

Little bucks always walk. Buckeye explained why.

Little does always walk. Can't tell if it is button buck. see above.

    Big does Shoot them. Tasty.

But wait. There is a magical time of year called the rut. Talk about a teaser that will bring em in. Liken it to a bait ball, skipy tuna on a bridal at the Hanibal, Rasta chain, Triple decker dredge. No better way to get a wall hanger close to the bow than a natural deer trail of a hot doe.
