So from that I gather that you fishing say 70 ft cable leader (when in 60 ft of water) directly from the lure to the snap swivel on the wire line.

I have done it a few times in the islands with some pretty good success. there is nothing like the bite of the grouper on those heavy rods. the setup i was using was 12 ft of #10 wire to a similar lure with the bonito strip. we would get plenty of bites, but pulled hooks on all the fish. I then switched it up by adding the mono leader from a wahoo setup (40 ft 300 lb mono) in between the wire leader and wire line. after we did that all the fish seemed to stay connected.

is your longer length of cable providing some sort of stretch?

    Thanks for the help

You pretty much are on the right track....Contrary to what some believe, multi-strand cable does stretch...not a lot but it does stretch...The longer the cable, the more stretch...Take notice of stretched multi-strand cable on a highway/road bridge.

Here is the formula for muti-strand cable stretch

Lets say we are fishing in 60ft...My cable leader is about 70-80' long...no shock leader like Wahoo fishing...If we catch bottom, we back down to the cable leader and cut it...Saves your wire on the mainline...can't replace that in the islands...Once the fish hits, we gun the boat and the Grouper come right to the surface blown up...Then its a matter of reeling to your swivel and wiring the 70-80' of cable...We get singles and doubles on just about every pass over the reef...If you want locations, please feel free to IM me.

We don't do this type of fishing anymore cause of the new regs...The technique is just to damn successful.

Purplegold, yes, the main boat I run is owned by Jason that owns the marina. It's the Grace May. You've probably heard me on 6. Give me a shout when you get back in town. The bottom fishing was tough today, we only had one grouper, and he was eaten by a 50+ 'cuda. We did do ok on other bottom fish, b-liners, grunts, triggers, etc. The pompano where a no go for everyone.
