LET'S "GET WHITE TO THE POINT"

MARLIN BLANCO......MISTER DIRTY WHITE BOY......DA CRACKER OF ALL CRACKERS......HE MAY JUST BE THE TOUGHEST OF ALL TO SET A HOOK IN

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO .....LET'S SAY.....BE 80 % ON ALL YOUR WHITES?

FIRST...........ONE MUST FISHING BE WHERE THEY LIVE.....

SECOND........ONE MUST SEE THESE THIEVES PRIOR TO THE "TAP TAP"

THIRD...........IF THERE'S ONE THERE'S PROBABLY TWO...AND THREE AND SO ON

THATS RIGHT.IF YOU ARE WATCHING CONSTANTLY WITH 20/20 PLUS VISION....(AND BEING UPSTAIRS DO HELP)......THEN YOU WILL CATCH MORE BLANCOS......USUSALLY AFTER HE HAS TAPPED 3 BAITS ...KNOCKED THEM OUT OF THE RIGGERS......YOU ARE WAY WAY WAY WAY TOO LATE......3 PAIRS OF EYES ON CONSTANT DUTY WILL EVENTUALLY FOUND THE WHITE BEFORE HE POUNDS

WHEN DA BEAST SCREAMS: " HE'S ON THE LEFT LONG ....OR ...."HE'S ON THE RIGHT SHORT" .........I INTERPRET THAT AS : DROP THE FRIGGING THING IN FREESPOOL AND FEED FEED FEED THE THING TO HIS ASS!!! I DON'T TAKE TIME TO LOOK AND TRY AND SPOT HIM...HELL NO...HE'S GONE BY THEN......FREESPOOL INTANTLY!!

HOPEFULLY , AND MORE TIMES THAN NOT, THE REST IS HISTORY!

    RAGTIME

NOW IF YOU MUST TAKE THE TIME GRABASSIN AND PUT OUT YOUR MARLBORO....IT IS ALSO TOO LATE

SHARE YOUR WHITEBOY TIPS HERE ........REMEMBER.....THIS IS ONLY MY WAY AND NOT THE ONLY WAY

I've found if you're free spooling let's say the right short, If I have qualified people on board, i''ll have someone dropped the opposite side bait as well. More than once I've had multiples.

First tip: Roland Martin and Bill Dance are not billfisherman

Do not wait just freespool. Do not jerk, do not even look for the fish, do not even pick up the rod until you have hit freespool. Then and only then pick up the rod. Dont stand there with the line in your left finger like a damn trout fisherman just leave the clicker on and dump that bad boy stipping line with your left hand rod tip pointed toward the fish. Tap Tap Tap slide it up to the button rod tip high and crank like you got a grander on. If you dont feel him on there dump it again. Repeat until you either get him or your arm is about to fall off.

Second tip: DO NOT GIVE UP ON THE DROP BACK.

Keep dumping that TLD cause he will come back to a wired down bait even if only the head of the hoo is left. I watched Often hook one a 1/4 mile from the damn boat. The fish came up on us and stayed up. We could see him WWWFB and we just kept dumping and he finally found it.

Third tip: Get your ass back to work

If you are not the angler, captain or the wire man get ready to start trolling again. Bring the riggers down, clip the lines back in, check your baits and rerig if ya need to. Be ready for when the wire man gets the fish and the captain gets the boat going to dump your mess back over the side. If there is 1 dirty white boy there may be many more or even the man in the blue suit may show up. Every second wasted getting the spread back out you are just getting further and further from the mark.

These are not my way!!!!!!!! These things I have witnessed fishing with far better fisherman than I that are now the way I do it.

    Talking Dinks

I would have to disagree, I think those little sails are harder to hook than whitey.

    Ah my Favorite Dink fishin......

So many subtle points I don't know where to start.

Well, when they (whites and sails) are around, i fish tld 25's atleast 4--longriggers and flatlines, and fewer lines, my typical spread with the tlds will be 80's in the short riggers six lines total, much eiasier to watch 6, two pitch rods.

Another thing I do is all of my tld have good clickers, I fish them in total free spool with the clicker on twisted in the pin. IE, when it gets hit and you don't see it, it gives you a little bit of time. when you get to the rod, turn the clicker off and feed it to him so de doesn't feel a thing.

If I see him first, which I really try very hard to do, get to the rod, turn clicker off and lightly thumb, he can't feel it though.

Long drop backs, did is say long, I mean long, it gagsem, but it hooks em. I have been fishing alot of circle hooks this past year and it is much better for the fish and the hook up ratios are pretty good.

Where there is one there is more.

If I don't see the other ones and we hook just one, I pop my long riggers out and put them in free spool (clickers off). After the rest of the spread is cleared, lock up the rods that have been freespooling and crankem tight, he will be on there more often than you would think. I did this several times this year and ended up with a double or a triple several times.

Watch, watch and watch some more, don't take your eyes off the spread, try not to run into other boats in the process, but keep looking back, did I say keep your eyes on the spread.

    Beat him to the rod.

So many more, but these are the biggies.

    Obi-Wan has taught me well.

In one swift motion pick up the rod, clicker off and PUSH THAT DRAG BACK, wait for it, wait for it, ever so slightly push the drag up and crank like hell, then let the memories begin.

rule #1 - if you have a knowledgable captain on the bridge then listen and do. They have a birds eye view of whats going on.

rule #2 - Spend a week or two in Venzuela in October. You will return and better marlin fisherman 10 times over.

I try not to freespool right away. I have found that their is a nano second between "he got it and freespool" and "he got it and its too late" . Once I feel him breath on the bait I drop into freespool. I have heard and read many opinions on the next phase but I prefer to point the rod at the fish and free spool with the clicker off. I also try to keep a constant finger on the line. If you can do so without impeding the runoff of the line then it should work. If you keep thumbing then releasing the line the fish is gonna feel ya. Their is a point during the freespool that something differnent happens. Its kinda between the fish speeding up or turning his head but the constant stream of freespool changes. That is when I try to move the drag up. I never set the hook. I just lift the rod tip slowly. just some thoughts on how I do it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

What I feel is most important is what happens 30seconds to 2 minutes after hookup. For some of us, raising that fish is the goal and once we get that fish hooked up we are satisfied for others it is just the begining. If you watch the crews of the Pelican, Run-off, Barbara B, DA Sea, Wound Up etc. the initial raising of the fish just tells them that the billfish are behind the boat. If they hook one then it means that they are not window shopping. Now the trick is how do you get the rest of the pack to attack?

I don't specificall target whitey very often. Most of the time I'm tuna trolling and he sneaks into the spread and take a bite at something. More often than not, since I'm trolling at about 8 knots, he gets hooked. But when I do target whitey I do it much differently from you guys.

I use skip rigged bally and troll five lines, two off each outrigger and one off the center rigger. All of the lines are secured to the releases with rubber bands. After the spread is set up, I put ALL of the drags in freespool, with the clicker on, and dump at least fifty feet of line over the side. Just let it drag alongside the boat. I troll as slow as I can go, which is about 4.5 knots. When the fish hits, the line pops out the release and you have a 50 foot dropback. By the time the angler gets to the rod, pick it up and pushes up the drag the fish is usually right there, waiting to feel the hook.
