The last Wednesday of every August about 40 boats and their owners volunteer their time and boat to take two to 300 hundred mentally and physically handicapped people fishing. I have to admit the first time I did it I was very apprehensive and needed a little arm twisting.
Well I have to tell you it was a great time. The excitement, joy, and shear pleasure these kids [some older than me] get from catching the smallest fish is contagious.
All I can say is, if you ever get the opportunity to do something like this it is well worth your time. This year will be my 23rd year.
Is that the Cape May Marlin & Tuna club event? Great event, I believe I will be participating in that this year.

Your not kidding! I had the HONOR of running a friends boat for this event. He could not make it and I offered. I still to this day am reminded as You were of what this meant to these Kids. I would do it in again in a NY minute. These People are very special and if You have spent any time with Them You would not hesitate to do it again and again! Mike

Honestly, you've got to be kidding me. Now I don't know Mr. seasea from a man on the moon, and he may be a hug a-hole. But in my opinion (and only my opinion) he made a harmless non-pc joke. If you have never told a short bus joke, or a n'er joke, or a sand n'er joke, or a 'slant eye' joke, or a jewish joke, or a cracker joke, or a muslim joke....maybe you get where I'm coming from....then by all means condemn this guy. I don't think there are going to be many w/o sin. I'm not calling anyone out in particular...I'm speaking about anyone and everyone.

Yes it is and even if you don't have a boat they are always looking for volunteers to help out. Every boat should have a mate.

Dang, I told a joke recently about a two-knee fish. Sure hope I don't have to throw in the towel. I know how everybody on SF feels about the poor, lowly fish.

    No comment on the 'joke'.

To any who may be interested in putting together an event similar to the one described by Mr. Jost, I'll be more than happy to help you organize it. I'm honored to serve as president of The Wish-A-Fish Foundation (www.wish-a-fish.org). We're a non-profit 501C3 corporation who's mission statement is to provide a day of relief to families challenged with raising a child with special needs, by taking them fishing. We currently run events in Maryland and Virginia, with new events for 2009 scheduled in Tampa, FL and possibly NJ. Whether on a head boat or private boats, after a 1/2 day fishing there's a cook-out and awards cerimony where each child receives a rod/reel combo and tackle box so they can continue to enjoy what we all (sometimes) take for granted.

Box, if you feel this is an inappropriate solicitation, please let me know... I'll delete it.

If this is something you, or your fishing club, would be interested in, please contact me.... I'll be happy to help.
