Helo is on the way, and Im looking forward to 21 days of fun in the sun, chasing bluefin on Cape Cod. So I figured last night after work, I would get the mojo started and see if I could land a couple tuna off the ship.
Around 10pm, we started what is known as a controlled drift, with the ship moving at about 0.5knots down current so the drilling department could pull up the near 6000ft of riser and blowout preventer stack up to the ship. So with a 3 knot surface current, and a .5 knot drift, and a light chop, we started launching various surface lures and irons.
It quickly became apparent that the tuna we saw exploding on top were blackfin, as on every cast, 5-7 of them would swirl or you would hook up with one. Since we were looking for the yellows, any that were hooked up were played out with a half hearted effort until they were able to throw the hook. But I figured I'd land a couple to show ya. Since they weren't all that big, I hand-lined these guys up about 55ft to the deck.
To release them, we have rigged a tail rope with a trip line. So we lower them about 5 ft off the waters edge, tip the loop, and they torpedo away.
Finally after about an hours effort and a few to many blackfin, we managed to find this little yellowfin on a deadly dick.
Helicopter is about to bout 20min away. IM OUTTTTT. Talk to you when I get to the beach.
