Nice report lee. I bet those last two were hell to catch in that sea. Did you have to backdown.

Nick - For some reason I am going to guess that you have passed the breakin period on that boat. - I can hear the excuse now. But honey - the boat needs to be broken in for 29 straight days. It says so right here in the manual. Run at 30knot for 1 hour. Rest the motors for 6 hours run again at 30 knots for one hour. I am just protecting OUR investment.

Good job Capt. Lee! Nice rig SeaBiscuit! I know Lee's out of range, but I have a question I was hoping SeaBiscuit or someone else could answer. When fishing the planer/drone combos for kings. What size planer and how much leader are you using? I've tried the combo several times and never had any luck. I've been using about 20-25' of leader (80# mono) and a #2 planer about 4-6 knots. What's my error? Headin' down June 2 weekend to Murrells Inlet for my first trip of the year and want have a little more success this year. Thanks!

Not sure if this will make the difference sharktooth, but my leaders from planer to drone spoon are more like 100'
    Good luck,

At least 60' of 80lb leader to a #4 planer. blue/white and pink/white are great colors. Don't start trolling until you find 68deg water.

Yea really...i have heard several reasons for having longer leaders but damn thats pretty long. Mind explainin a little further on that hotrodmarlin? Planers to me are a pain in the ass period most of the time..but they do get your lures down and catch fish.

    Thanks

I used to commercial king fish out of Carolina Beach and the captain would yell "DAMMIT MIKEY I'M GONNA THROW YOU OFF THIS #@#$*^ BOAT IF I SEE ANOTHER _#%@*LEADER SHORTER THAN 60 #^%$@# FEET!! Thats what he used say and that's why I said 60'....here was our setup.

2 #16planers straight off downriggers each corner 60'leader with either whitch/strip combo or drone spoon. starboard downrigger at 90' and port at 60'.
2 #4 planers on rods/electramates 60'leader either witch/strip or drone spoon. port long and starboard shorter.
    2 flat lines witch/strip combo 30' leader.
With this setup ONLY MAKE RIGHT TURNS!!! ABSOLUTELY NO LEFT TURNS!!!
IF YOU SEE A CIRCLE OF BOATS DON''T RUN THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THEM!!!!
When you get on a school pull in the top lines. They normally hit the deep lines first and when you put the lines back down don't put them as deep. Keep doing this and you can raise the school to the surface. When you get em chewing off the back of the boat, don't even use the rods/planers. just throw the spoon out and hold on.
Hope I have explained it well enough- I'll be happy to answer any other questions.

HotRod is right. My experience in commercial king mack fishing was very similar, using even longer leaders of 125 lb jinkai leader.

we probably only used 60' because the captain was too cheap to use 100'
